Another rumor... Can't Post

We had Dish Network come out here yesterday and cause of so many trees in our backyard, the guy said we were unable to get a signal and he said to try Direct Tv or call someone else from Dish Network to come out here to double look and make sure. I called my cousin down the road and he said that he had direct tv and that there were trees that he thought would cause a problem with the signal, but sure enough he's been able to get a signal for many years. So, I didn't think it would hurt to call Direct Tv to ask them myself about it. I called and talked to the guy and he said that Dish Network had only 5 satellites and Direct Tv have 11 and I asked him right away if the satellite would have to point to the southern sky and he said no, he was a rumor. He asked where I heard that from and I told him off the website. But he said it was a rumor. As anyone else been told the same thing, just wondering. I made sure that I told him that we had trees in our backyard and why we couldn't get dish network, the trees are high and in the backyard and some on the sides but it's not like they are cluttering the sky, I mean you can see a lot of the sky through the trees, I honestly do think that Dish Network could have tried if they wanted to cause that's what tall poles are for...honestly these guys just seemed like they didn't want to. But they weren't lying about dish network having lower signal than direct tv. Just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced something like this.

It is not a rumor... all the satellites that Direct TV, and Dish net uses are about 23000 miles over the equator… so depending on where you live where they will be… but if you are north of the equator they will be in the southern sky… could be south east or south west or close to south… the closer you are to the equator the higher they will be in the sky… but they will be in the southern sky

Hmmm, don't know why the guy would tell me that it was a rumor and have them to come all the way out here and tell us that the trees are blocking the view. But looking outside a little while ago, we do have a clear view of the southern sky, I saw a perfect place for the satellite on the corner of the house that was facing the southern sky without a whole lot of trees blocking the view, it was more southeast though but still facing south. Dish network did not even try working with us they just came inside and told us that they had bad news and that there would be no signal whatsoever and left after telling us to call either this other guy at Dish network or calling direct Tv and when I spoke to the guy and ordered direct tv he said that dish network had less satellites and direct tvs are higher satellites, also what the guy from dish network said. I have no idea where the equater is located, but just wondering if the satellite can face southeast or west and pick up signal as long as its facing south all together.

we get the same problem in the UK.if its not a 10 minute job they are too lazy to bother trying different places in the garden to get a good signal.by the way the equator is round the middle of the earth so wherever you are in the US it should be south of you.

If you are in the east - you need to point the dish sw

Go to this site and select the first directv ( select sat box ) and it will give the coorindates for your address.

then just take a compass to your yard and check

http://www.sadoun.com/...ading-Calculator.htm

Directv has 7 sats in the sky today. Two are only used for international channel packages and some local channels.

There is one main sat used for most of the channels.

The rest are used for the HD channels

The satellites are in a specific place over the equator… DirectTV US satellites are at 72.5w, 99.2w, 101.0w, 102.8w 109.8w, 119.0w and Dish net’s are 61.5w, 105.0w, 110.0w, 119.0w, 121.w, 129.0w, and 148.0w… you can us a computer program… you will need to know your Latitude and your longitude (if you do not know them you can go to this link http://www.fallingrain.com/world/US/ and click on your state, then click on your city or the one closest to you… take that info (lat, and long) go to this link http://www.satsig.net/ssazelm.htm and put in the satellite info (use a “-“ in front of the number for all satellites in north America… like this “-110.0”) then put in your latitude and then your longitude (this one you will need to put a “-“ in front also) next click “Click to calculate results” in the windows below the button you just clicked you will see some numbers that you can use with a compass (to see where it is to the south) and a declinometer (tells the look angle or how high it is in the sky) to see if the trees are in the way. It also gives you the info to setup your dish youeself if you wanted to get really frustratedCrazy

Thanks for the link and thank you all for the information, I am new to this whole satellite thing. I do live in the east part of the usa, I live in North Carolina on the east coast. Our backyard is full of tall trees which is south, the trees go around to the side of the house. The only REALLY clear opening is east which is a big open field infront of our house. The trees do have opening to the sky, it's not like we cant see the sky at all. Maybe I need to take a picture and post it so you guys can get a better idea of what i'm talking about lol.

Most of the satellites will be southwest of you… the best thing will be to figure out where they are and then see if there is any place on your property that you can get a clear view of the sat.

Well, there are some clear views southwest as I can tell, so hopefully since Direct Tv have more satellites than Dish Network, it might just work. The satellite could be placed in the front yard on the ground cause there's a clear shot of the sky depending on like you said, where the satellite is located.

Re: [doc20us] Another rumor... [In reply to] Can't Post

I just noticed something, right above our house is a clear opening pointing south and dish network I think could have easly put up a pole directing the satellite right towards that spot, but they did use a signal meter and said they couldnt get a signal. I am just wondering if they were just not being completely honest or if they just really suck with signals, I find what they told us hard to believe. But it could just be they couldnt find one of their five little satellites. Unsure

Installers get paid per job, so sometimes some installers just don't take the time to look for location with a good sight line.

Anyone in the area have Directv ? Look at the direction their sat dishs are pointed , it should give you an idea of the general direction for the sat.

Can the trees be trimmed ?

Here is a link which does a good job of showing how close to trees a sat dish can be pointed

Re: [TANK1] Another rumor... [In reply to] Can't Post

As a matter of fact, yes, my cousin has a direct dish in his yard and he installed it himself and he has tons of trees in his back and he thought for sure he wouldnt get a signal but he did and it never gave him any problems, everyone down our neighborhood has a dish, either it being through direct tv or dish network. I noticed one of our neighbors that have one and their yard is packed with trees, front and back and both sides, it's like they are almost living in the woods to be honest with you and they have a satellite pointing directing at trees with less opening than my front yard and back yard all together. So evidently, they have a signal and with all the opening in the front yard at my house, don't see why Direct Tv wont pick up a signal Wednesday when they come.

As for the installers, I agree. I think that if they had tried they might would have found one, I don't even know how far they looked around the yard before they came inside to tell us that we wouldn't get a signal at all and said that they would hate to hook it all up and it not work, they didn't even suggest any solutions, instead they told us to call some guy at Dish Network and have him to come out here and over look, but I figured I'd just call Direct Tv instead since they have higher signals than Dish Network.

The trees in the backyard are tall, there's no way they can be trimmed being that high up. Cut down yes, but lots of money to do that. As for the front yard, it's very open. I notice a lot of people have their satellite installed in the middle of their yard sitting on the ground. And one person I know, has their satellite pointing directly at trees and not even the sky...so with our yard have clear line, I really don't see why they cant find a signal. And makes me wonder if those guys were just being very lazy Saturday, they were on the phone with someone.

Thanks for the link, I checked it out. I wish I had a good compass but don't then I could find out but coming from the pictures, there are places in our yard that demonstrate the yes picture. Depending on if they can get a signal there. The "Maybe" picture, is kind of what Dish Network told us...and the "No", reminds me of that person I know who has a satellite pointing at the trees in his yard, how he got a signal I don't know...I guess some things are possible!!!

Thanks for all the help. I will check back soon!

I figured I would take a couple of shots of my house and front yard. Take note that one of my neighbors has a yard full of trees and less clear view of southern sky that we do. And somehow they have a signal and I don't know how really, looks like they wouldn't be able to get one at all and don't know if they have direct tv or dish network, my guess is direct tv cause if Dish Network was unable to find a signal in our yard with 5 satellites then I know they wouldn't have been able to find one in my neighbors yard. Unless, they didn't have lazy techs.

I would call Directv and explain the trees and ask for installation.

Other options are a pole mount away from the house .

Or a tv tower - here is a link with pictures to give you an idea
http://www.tvantenna.com/...xb/dmxbfeatures.html

You can find used ones in the papers for a few dollars and some are free if take them down.
An option if you have the man power to do it.

Yes, we have a long pole that goes up pretty high already at the house incase they need to use it or don't have one with them. And if they can do it, my grandma lives next door to us and she has a clear line cause all the trees are further away so was wondering if they had any complications if they could install the satellite there and run the cables to our house, she lives next door, it's like just a few feet away.

Another clear shot of the front I saw was this here...

I'm thinking a pole would do the trick.

The person that placed the order for installation Wednesday already knows about the tree issue, I told him exactly what Dish Network told us. He basically told me that it wouldn't be a problem and they have more signals than Dish Network, also told me it was a rumor about the whole southern sky thing which I do think he's wrong and once I find out he lied to me about that, I will be very mad and tell the techs thats what he told me.

That pole looks high enough to get a view over the trees.

Good luck

Yeah, I agree. We did some searching around today and we found more open spots and a very clear spot that I totally forgot about cause i didn't think it was our property but is...so i have a good feeling now that they will be able to pick up something. I will wait until Wednesaday to find out, thanks for all the info and the good luck!

Re: [Kristyj077] Another rumor... [In reply to] Can't Post

Direct Tv came out here yesterday, they called me in advance glad they did cause that guy that I spoke with on the phone got everything screwed up it seems when he placed the order, he told me it was today.

Anyway, this tech was really cool. Not like Dish Network techs, he helped us find a solution since he couldn't pick up a signal from the front yard...he mentioned clearing out a spot through all the weeds and bushes in our backyard that leads to the woods cause there's a clear shot of the sky. He said we could reschedule it so I spoke with the supervisor on the phone and have another appt set up for next Monday. Soon as the tech left, I started cleaning the area out and made a nice path, he even mentioned us using a pipe to run the cables since we had one. Instead of us digging a trench. So, we have a great spot now and ready for hook up on Monday. Wink
