Antoher Local Channel ? Can't Post

Just purchased a 50" plasma and installed Direct TV. I purchased the off air antenna, however the installers said it was a waste as I live behind a mountain and over 85 miles from the stations broadcasting the over the air signal. I would like to view the local channels (I don't care what market) in HD. Direct TV cannot give me access to the east coast or west coast feeds. Living in NM (87506) I do not qualify for the east and west feeds and I am certain we will be the last state to get the local link in HD. What can I do right now to get the east or west coast feed? Thanks for your help....

Eligibilty review for the following:
SANTA FE, NM 87506 Standard Distant Network Service
Not available because DIRECTV offers local network programming in your area

Digital (HD) Distant Network Service
Network Affiliate Status ABC KOAT-DT Grade B (moderate signal) CBS KRQE-DT Grade B (moderate signal) FOX KASA-DT Grade A (strong signal) NBC KOB-DT Grade A (strong signal)

According to directv you should be able to fox and nbc with no problem.

Abc and cbs might require a bigger tv antenna.

If a mountain is between you and the tv towers, then you can get the stations.

Have you tried to receive these stations.

Tank -- thanks for the reply.

When you say I can receive the stations because I am behind a mountain do you mean via an off air antenna or the east and west coast feeds? When submitting the waiver, direct tv told me that I had a 1 and 5 chance of being approved.

I have not installed an off air antenna as I have been steered away from it by installers and direct tv personnel. I am more than happy to try if you think it is worth it. I looked into the some off air antennas and I had a difficult time finding one rated for my distance that was not horribly ugly and cumbersome. Do the small dish type (xium) antennas work well at my distance? If I install an antenna, is it possible to install it and use one of the existing cables that goes to my HD DVR to test the signal before I drill yet another hole in my wall?

Again, thanks for your help thus far!

Go to here http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/Address.aspx

enter your address and the next page shows you what type of antenna you need and all the channels in your area.

Above the chart is link to view from street, this shows you what direction the tv towers are to your address.

I used your zip code and you should have no problem getting the channels with a tv antenna and a rotor.

Any questions,I would be glad to help

Tank,

I received my Antenna today. I am going to install it this afternoon. Before I drill another hole in my wall I would like to test it and make certain that it is going to work. My thought is to disconnnect the secondary satelite cable and use it for the off air antenna until I am certain it will work. Is this ok to do? Thanks for your help.

Remember to connect the cable to the antenna in and NOT the sat in on the sat box.

Good Luck and let me know how it works
