DTV HD dish+box w/o svc? Can't Post

Just bought a Panny 50" HD plasma and was hoping that the regular DirecTV svc would provide DVD like quality, which would be adequate. Unfortunately, we're suffering from "clown face" and a pic that isn't quite up to snuff.

Not interested in paying $10 extra/mo for a few network channels and a handful of sports channels I won't use.

I've been told that having the HD dish and receiver, even w/o paying for HD svc will improve pic quality. A friend has a free HD receiver available, and I have the extra coax running from the roof. I'd need to buy a dish somewhere. They seem plentiful on Ebay.

Will a hardware upgrade improve general picture w/o the svc? I understand I'd need to register the new box with DTV, and they'd prolly push to sell the svc at that time.

Beyond this upgrade thinking of dumping DTV and going to OTA HD antenna and Netflix for now.

Save my DTV svc...

The Hd pak also includes TNT -HD, HDNET which has movies.A Hd box will also give you the HD version of HBO,Showtime if you already have a sub to them. The Hd version is offered at no added charge.

Do you get "clown face' with the dvd player?

Directv is starting to roll out the new sat dishes and boxes. These will be needed to get your local HD channels and all HD customers will switch over in time.

To get your best non-hd picture, use a sat box with component video cables. They are three cables which carry the video to the set.The cables have a red, blue, and green markings on the ends.

Some non-hd Directv have these,check the tivos,Samsung S-75,Samsung 301and I think a RCA box had them.

Also try running a set up dvd like AVIA to adjust your color, tint, sharpness, contrast, and brightness.Sound + Vision also makes one. This could coorect the clown face problem.

Thanks for the details.

Already worked with Bruzzi's article on "Polishing the T$%d." I have component in from DVDs which look very good, but only S Video out of the D* box. DVDs have perhaps a few artifacts here and there, but overall much cleaner than the D*. If I had similar quality from the D*, we'd have no issues. Wife is pushing to just get an OTA antenna and be done with it til MPeg4 shows its with D*, though I suspect it will be MPeg$ when it comes out.

I may plug in my friend's HD box if only to get the Component outs (hope it has them). To see if that helps.

With a HD set you really need to connect with component video cables.

There should be a non hd component video in on your set.
