DVD RECORDER WITH MY HR20 Receiver

I just bought philipps dvdr3400 recorder. I went to install and the instructions state to plug cables satellite cables through the dvd recorder. I thought I would be able to hook up the recorder to my tv and maybe my dvd/vcr combo, that I planned to keep using as the primary dvd player. What should I do? and if the answer is to hook up the satellite through the recorder, how would I do that?
