Direct TV HD - A couple questions & Audio....

Hey all,
Thanks for being here 1st off.
We just went from DTV DVR to DTV HD DVR.
I understand that even though you are on an HD channel, not all is IN HD. But non HD channels kill the size of the TV screen. I can use stretch but sometimes they looks worse. I mean, whats the use of a big TV if it gets shrunk down unless HD. I still have to play with it but any feedback would be appriciated.
The DTV receiver has a digital audio out. Now I use the Red,white RCA jacks to my surround sound and it's fine. But the DTV installer said, if you want true 5.1 dolby digital. Get a digital audio cable. (orange) So I did but can't for the life of me get any sound out of it. I THINK it may take a call to Philips who makes the DVD/surround sound system I have. I unhook the red/white RCA jacks and ONLY have the digital audio cable leaving the DTV receiver and entering the surround sound. Just cant get sound. Off hand I dont have model # of Philips and the HD DTV is the 21-200 I think?
Any imput would be grateful.
