Electric shock through wall jack Can't Post

I have a weird problem. I have 4 rooms installed for sat by Direct tv. I just upgraded to a hd dvr with new 5 lnb dish. I connected an older sd receiver to one of the rooms and got a severe shock. I hooked it into the box (probably bad idea) and said there was no signal and seconds later it started smoking. Is a small current normal or generated by the lnb's? If not the only thing I can think of is that the installer screwed the cable holders into a power wire, however that would have to mean that he screwed through the RG6 as well, and as far as I can see the rg6 looks clean (exterior install) . Anyway and ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

I don't understand what you mean by hooked into the box. Please give me some more details.

The new install - all the coax is outside the walls - correct ? You say new install , but then say older sd reciever.

So did you just upgrade to HD ( 5lnb ) and when you reconnected the sd reciever it smoked ?

Did the sat reciever start smoking - when you connected the coax or plugged it into the wall socket ?

Are you using any power strips, surge protectors or anything between the sat reciever and the wall socket?

I use surge protectors on all my sat recievers.
Here is a link to see what a surge protector looks like

You can find them in any big store - wal Mart, target , Best Buy, circuit city ,sears , lowes , home depot etc

ok sorry When I connected the coax to the receiver it starting smoking. The receiver was good as it was being used in another room. I do run a 5 way to the power. The coax is carrying the power not the receiver. The inital install was done a few years ago by dtv. All wiring was outside (no attic) I upgraded to the new dish and dual receiver by dtv installers. Even the installer was getting shocked. If you plug the coax to the wall jack and touch the other end to the metal side of the receiver a spark will shoot out and almost weld itself the the metal. This just sounds like too much voltage to be running through the coax to me.

You say all the wiring is outside but then you say when connected to the wall jack.

If there is any coax wiring in the walls- was it installed by directv ?

Is it rg-6 coax cable inside the walls ?

If the house was pre wired for cable and they used rg-56 ( used for cable tv ) that is where your problem proably is .

The coax runs under the eves and than through the wall to the receiver. It was instlled by dtv and they used white (what I presume is rg6) coax. Prior to dtv installing the wiring there was nothing.

Glad to hear you have in wall wiring.

Why did the installer leave without fixing the problem ? Why didn't he run all new cable from the new 5 lnb sat dish to the receivers ?

I would call Directv and complain about the install and tell them the installer noticed the shock from the wiring , but didn't repair it or report it. You are in fear of your home burning down with everyone inside.

That should speed up the time frame for the repairs to be made. It sounds like you just need to be rewired.
And ask for HD package for free for a year for the problems caused, they usually give it to you. They don't want unhappy subs posting on the internet or complaining to neighbors.

Good Luck
