Error code 771 showing up on H-20 receiver Can't Post

I have been getting the "searching for sat signal" error code 771 message every time I am watching HD on my H-20 receiver.. I have reset the receiver, unplugged it, took off then back on the cables, unplugging the receiver..... It worked at first, but now it doesn't and I just keep getting the error code 771 and that the receiver is "searching for the signal" What do I do?

We are going to try find the problem.

When you did reset it,did you then get a signal ? If yes we know your sat dish is still getting a signal and the problem is somewhere between the sat dish and receiver.

Do you have any splitters, ground block or multi switches between your sat dish and receiver?
Do you have any other receivers in the house? Are they getting a signal ? If yes can you hook one of them in the room where H20 is. If you get a signal and don't lose it, the problem is the receiver. If you lose the signal then the problem is in the cabling.

Are the connectors like these

or these

They should be barrel type in the first link for the H20.

Re: [TANK1] Error code 771 showing up on H-20 receiver [In reply to] Can't Post

Tank: Thanks: Let me explain in detail my system.. I have the 3 lbn dish (since 2004) hooked up to 5 receivers. 3 are just regular phillips receivers, 1 is a r-10 dvr and the other is a series 2 tivo dvr. They are all working correctly. I even have the r-10 running to my entertainment room where my 53" tv is located (HD Ready)... In Feb. of 2006, i got the new 5 lbn dish.. I also got an h-20 hd receiver. I ONLY ran 1 line from the 5 lbn to my entertainment room, that line is hooked up to the h-20.. No other lines are on the 5 lbn.. I also ran that line directly to my receiver from the 5 lbn dish. In the fall of 2006, my h-20 began resetting itself, and after 3 months, d-tv sent me a reconditioned h-20 in december of 06.. Now it is losing its signal. At first it would go out, then I would reset it and it would come back on eventually. Now when I reset it, it MIGHT come on for a few minutes, but when I go to change the channel, it goes blank and I get the error code 771 searching for signal . Now when i reset it, it is hit and miss. Most of the time now I get nothing. I checked my cables and dish. Everything looks ok. Any suggestions?

Try connecting the H20 to one of coax lines from the old 3 lnb dish . You still will be able to get most of the channels and see if it works or starts searching for signal.

Or connect one of the other receivers to the coax from the new 5 lnb dish, they still will get the signal from the main sat at 101 .

Then you know for sure that the receiver is bad or the dish is out of alignment.

That way you get prove to directv that the receiver is bad and needs replacing without any service call.

Re: [TANK1] Error code 771 showing up on H-20 receiver [In reply to] Can't Post

Tank: An update..... I took my line off of the 5 lbn dish and hooked ito line one of my r-15 that is on the same tv but on different dishes. The r-15 is hooked up to the 3 lbn dish and the h-20 is hooked up to the 5 lbn dish. I took the line off of the h-20 and attached it to line 1 of the r-15.. It worked with no problems and no searching for sat. signal code. I keep the tv on and pulled the line out and it went blank, when i reinserted it , it came back on with no problems. I then took that line and put it back on my h-20 and I got the searching for sat. code 771 again. I talked to d-tv and they are going to send me another h-20. (i have to pay 19.99 shipping).. What is puzzling to me is that i then reset the h-20 by unplugging it and taking the cables off then on, and it began to work, and it worked for the rest of the night(last night)... So i really don't know what to think... Any comments or suggestions.?
Thanks

Ok you now know the r-15 worked with no problems when connected to the 5 lnb sat dish. that tells us the sat dish is aimed correctly and all the cables are good on it.

Sounds like you just got another bad h20.

Do you put the h20 in a closed cabinet or somewhere it is overheating causing failure ?

Re: [TANK1] Error code 771 showing up on H-20 receiver [In reply to] Can't Post

My original H-20 had overheating issues. The reconditioned(current one) has not had that problem. It sets on top of a wooden shelf, and has plenty of ventilation space. I am just hoping that it is not the dish being slightly off. I had enough of these h-20 's, they have been nothing but problems. I love d-tv and the hd content. I have the premier package and nfl package. I have 2 dvr's and 1 h-20 and 3 phillips receivers. I asked the rep last night what it would cost me to upgrade to an HR-20 (HD dvr) and she told me it would be $299.00. I found that to be offensive.. I have been a loyal customer for over 4 years, and I pay $140 a month for service. I have had numerous, numerous problems with my h-20's and it has been over 6 months since I got the reconditioned h-20.. THAT IS THE BEST DEAL THEY COULD OFFER? ... I am just worried that the one they will send me now will be saturated with more tech problems.. I just couldn't get over how the 2nd rep., was rude and was acting like I was lying about my problems with my h-20 so I could upgrade to an HR-20...I was stunned...I was just trying to fix the problem I was having and still have...
Thanks

You can ask for the dept called Customer Retention, explain your problems and ask for a deal on a HD dvr .

They are authorized to make any deals and of course tell them that your cable company or dish will give you a better deal and NFLST isn't worth much if the receiver doesn't work.

You should be able to get the HD DVR for $199.I have read other forums of people getting that deal.
