Frozen on Test Channel Can't Post

I keep getting stuck on this Direct TV Test Channel 494. As soon as I get to this channel everything freezes. The remote won't power off or change channels and the receiver also will not power off or change channels. I have gotten out of the screen by unplugging the receiver from the outlet. But I don't want to keep doing this. How do I get rid of this channel? Or is this a receiver problem? I have called Direct TV and have gotten the run-around about 4 times now.

Delete the test channel in your remote. You can delete channels you don't watch or sudscribe to like HBO,Starz, sports channels etc.

What receiver do you have? Model?

I have a Hughes HIRD-E1. How do I go about deleting the channel?

You can delete channels by setting up a "favorites" channel list.

Check your owners guide for instructions or just hit meneu on your remote and start there.

If you have problems call Directv and ask for help to set up a "favorites" listof channels.

I have never owned a Hughes reciever,so I can't tell you exactly how to do it.

Re: [TANK1] Frozen on Test Channel [In reply to] Can't Post

Tank,
I have the hd20 receiver and I have tried to set up the favorites menu to eliminate the channels that I do not get, but some of them keep showing up there. Any suggestions as to how to eliminate them?

Also, on the menu of "channels I receive" it lists everything and I do not subscribe to all this. How to pare the list down??

Thanks for your help!

Some of the channels you eliminate reappear because they go off the air in the middle of the night and come back on during the day. So the guide thinks it is a new channel and adds it.

The Gems channel does this everyday.

The all channels profile can't be be changed only the channel profiles you set up.

Re: [TANK1] cannot edit favorites list [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the reply!
In the meantime, I spent time on the phone with direct tv about this, and, fyi, they were not able to tell me how to pare down the (filtered) favorites list. I guess I will just have to live with a favorites list that will not filter out the other channels, when I use the "filtered" page. I think, the non-filtered section of the guide lists only the channels that I marked as being the ones I get, tho. Unsure

BTW, can I use the existing house (cable) distribution system for distribute the raw signal off the dish to other receivers thruout the house? I think the existing cabling is rg58, and I understand that I may need th rg6? What about the splitters in the line? I currently only have one reciever on line, and one tv. Hence, only one coax leading from the dish straight to this hd receiver. I would like to add other sets around the house by splitting this one coax feed and sending the dish signal to the existing cable distribution system, and to these other sets, and receivers.
I do not want to have to run additional coax all over the roof and thru walls, since I already have the existing cable distribution system in the attic and in the walls.
Appreciate your help! In browsing the forum, I see you have been a great help to many folks here! Smile

You can't just splice and split sat signals like you can with cable

A D* sat dish the small round one has two lines off it that can connected to a multiswitch which can give you 4 or 8 depending on the switch. You cannot use regular cable splitters.

The other D* dishs the triple lnb oval and new HD dishes both have 4 lines that come off the dish and can connected to a multiswitch. For HD service you need a certain multiswitch.

You can use the old cable BUT only for short runs and not for HD service and you still could have problems if there an old splitter used inside the walls somewhere .

If upgrade to a DVR or Hd service D* will come out and run new cable and connect everything for you. If you have been with them for over 1 year , you can't get it done for free usually.

Re: [TANK1] signal distribution [In reply to] Can't Post

tank,

I was afraid of that. I guess the in-the-walls cables are now useless. I really don't want to have coax all over the outside of the house, tho.

I have the HD dish, so I guess the installer has used a 4 to one reverse splitter in order to get the four outputs from the dish down to one? In order to add another several receivers, I would have to replace this with a 4 to 8 splitter? I am not going to distribute the HD anywhere but to the existing set.

again, thanks for your help! You must spend a huge amount of time on the forum!Smile

On the HD sat dish you can use only one or all 4 of the coax lines . He just connected 1 line , so you can add 3 more coax cables without adding a multiswitch.

You can use regular ( NON - HD ) D* receivers with that sat dish also or a basic dvr ( DVR's use 2 coax cables ) also.

Re: [TANK1] signal distribution [In reply to] Can't Post

that is certainly good news! I need to understand more about all these lines and such work. Is there a good technical reference source about how these thinks work? I am an engineer, so I can understand all the technical jargon. For example, I assumed that each coax ran from separate lnb and each lnb received for a separate satellite. I guess this is not the case...Unsure

Thanks again!

Re: [sailor44] signal distribution [In reply to] Can't Post

Each lnb matches up with one of D* sats in the sky.
For basic service you only need a single lnb dish, but some of the local channels in a few areas ( also HD channels ) were put on a different sat so a dish with 3 lnb's was needed.

The new sats used are for HD channels and use a different decoding system ( mpeg 4 ) . The new D* HD dishs have 5 lnb's.
