HELP with TIVO box HR10-250

I picked up a HR10-250 direct tv TIVO and was wondering what needs to be done to the new drive prior to installing it. I have done tons of reading and now I am more confused!
I understand I need to put software on the drive and found instantcake to be the only place online where I can get it for a fee. I was not interested in paying for it and I dont have the old drive to backup the files.
Can someone please help me!!?? :)
I would like to replace my current reciever but the problem is I only have one line ran in that room and I understand Tivo requires two. Can I use a splitter somwhere and is there such a device?
