Have to replace Sony DSS--Help? Can't Post

Things have changed in 10 yrs. since we bought our Sony DSS. We really like it, but it has been pixelating for about 6 mos. now on about all of the stations.(some worse than others) Have been with Direct TV all this time.
Hope some one can help us with our options? Is it no longer possible to just buy a satellite receiver without doing the lease program?
Is it possible to buy a used receiver and use our current access card with it?
We are eventually wanting to get HD when they have more programming. We don't want to subscribe to the HD package for $10 more a month, so would the HD receiver work without the HD package and just use our old satellite--10 yr. old Sony Dish?
Anyway, I really wish my Sony would work, because we are very satisfied with our present programming for now! I would appreciate any input you might have of what we could do. Thanks, Karen

The options are getting a new receiver from Directv, Best Buy or anyplace else.
The basic receiver is $49.99 and you start a new 1 year commitment to Directv and it is a lease. So if it dies , Directv replaces it at no cost.

Or you can by a used Sony receiver BUT you will need an access card. 99% of the time Directv will not transfer access card from your dead Sony to the replacement. They want to buy another access card at $20.

I would call Directv and ask for customer retention dept and ask about the access card. Be sure and mention how you have been with them for 10 years and how you get a new system from Dish for free.

They will give you some kind of a deal, maybe free Showtime for 6 months.

If you have a Hd set and want to upgrade to HD service. They will replace the sat dish with one for HD service .

The receiver is $99 and if you call customer retention you can always get the HD package for free for 6 months.

Tank1--Just want to say a big heartfelt "Thank You" for taking the time out to explain this to me! Do you know of any websites that have reviews on used and new receivers? Would like your opinion on them too, if you like. Thanks again, Karen

Karen-
I have used the new D10, and Samsung SIR -75 without any problems.Non DD RCA are average but I would not buy one again.
Problems with the RCA - DD dropouts on DD broadcasts.

There are no real websites with reviews because Directv has limited your choice to just one new non HD or DVR model .

Tank1--We are considering the Direct TV H20 HDTV from www.2000networks.com website. So, does that mean if we purchase it from there, we don't have to pay the lease fee to Direct TV? Also, we do have Sony HD ready tv., but probably wouldn't want to get HD programming yet, if we didn't have to. So, if we did get the H20 (HD) receiver, can we still get regular programming with our old Sony dish on it or do we have to go ahead and get the HD programming along with getting another HD dish? Thanks again, Karen

Have one more question. Is the Direct TV H20 receiver compatible with a VCR? Thanks, Karen

The lease fee is waived for the first receiver on your account, it really is just the additional receiver fee renamed. You get purchase it anywhere you like , without paying the lease fee if it is the only receiver on your account.

If you check out this link it will tell you if directv has your local channels in HD at no extra charge.Your local sports regional sports might be available in HD also at no extra charge.

http://www.directv.com/...s.jsp?assetId=900018

If you already have HBO or Showtime they are also in HD at no extra charge.

If want to upgrade to HD without adding the HD package there are HD channels added at no extra charge.

You can use the H20 with an old dish to just get the old SD channels that your Sony receiver gave you.
You would need to get the new 5 lnb sat dish to get HD programing with local channels.
