Hooking up aftermarket DVR

I have a standard Direct TV receiver. If I buy a DVR receiver on eBay, can I hook it up myself? Are there any that are incompatible with current Direct TV? Do I have to pay the monthly charge if I install it myself? Would I use the card that comes with what I buy or the one from my current receiver?
