TIVO behind DirectTV receiver

I'm considering switching to satellite, from cable. I already own two TIVO units. My local DirectTV provider will supply me with the receivers free of charge (installation anyway). But, they want $100 for each reciever that comes with built in DVR (TIVO service). Instead of paying the extra for the built in DVR can I simply put the TIVO in between the Satellite receiver unit and the TV? My concern is that I want to make sure that the TIVO can still download TV programming information. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
