question: has anyone had the problem of when watching certain channels a black box will pop up on the screen with jumbled characters??

if you switch the source input then it will go away, but will usually come back later.

Also if you tivo a show it will be there too and the same solution will fix it temperarily, but i haven't been able to find a permanate fix.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

I am just guessing,but if you are saying you are watching a show and black box appears smaller than the whole screen.It may be the PIP (picture in picture) feature of your tv set coming on my it self.

Go into your set up menu of your tv set and turn off the PIP feature.

its not PIP....my TV doesn't even have a PIP feature....the box usually takes up most of the screen with jarbbled letters and characters in it....i know what PIP is and this is definately different.....thanks for the suggestion though

I have the same issue with my tv, it has something to do with the closed captioning...unfortunately with my tv, closed captioning won't turn off. I set it to CC4 and that seemed to fix the issue...no more black box. But if you can turn it off then do it.

Tongue Your TV is most likley set for Closed Captions. If not it's the IRD or FTA or whatever you are using as an input.
