splitting directv Can't Post

i got a question/problem for anyone out there who can help me. i recently signed up for service from directv in my apartment. i have one tivo unit in my living room and a receiver unit in my bedroom. i went with directv because i want to get nfl ticket and watch my steelers since i'm living away from the 'burgh. my buddies and i plan on setting up 4 tvs in the living room so almost everyone can watch whatever game they choose to, for some reason they don't like the steelers, i know, i find it hard to believe too. i know i cannot use a regular cable splitter, that would be too easy. i think i have to get a multi-switch in order to have enough outputs for as many tvs as we choose. i'm also aware i need a receiver unit for each tv. not sure i understand the whole deal with access cards, but i guess i need one for each receiver as well? i saw on ebay one could get receivers with access cards and have it activated. is that really all there is to it? do i just have to do that and i won't have a larger monthly due to "additional rooms" and the directv will work with all the tvs? thanks for any and all of your help.

Even if you are a Steelers fan,I will help you in case any Raven's fans show up.

If you have a round 18" sat dish, there are two coax lines.Since you have a tivo and another sat box in the bedroom you should already have a mult-switch.(2 coax lines for the tivo and one for the bedroom unit=3) Since there dual tuners in the tivo, you should be able to run a rca cable from the video out on the tivo to 2nd tv just for the games.Bring the bedroom sat box and tv in.Then you just need a new sat box and tv for #4.The new sat box needs a access card and you will be charged $4.99 extra reciever fee.

Take your bedroom tv and try the tivo with the video out to see if it works. You should see different channel on each tv.If doesn't work come back and I will tell you another way.

You want to avoid used recievers, because you need new access cards at $20 a piece plus ebay shipping charges for the box .

A new sat box with access card is only $49 from best buy, circuit city. You don't save that much by going with a used one.

thanks for the quick replay tank. i tried hooking up a tv with rca cables off the tivo unit but i got the same channel on both tvs, so i guess that idea is out. any other ideas? i'm thinking, why can't i just get some activated access cards off of ebay or something like that. i mean, as long as they're activated can't you just plug them into any receiver, get the channel and bypass that whole $4.99 per room fee. i'd only be using the additional tvs for a few hours on sundays during football season anyways. thanks again.

Access cards are married to certain reciever. You can't take your access card out of one receiver and just plug it in and play it on another

Since you want 4 tv's you will have to buy two new sat boxes. You just activate them for the season and deactivate them after the season. Then activate them again next year. You have to pay $4.99 a month for each box while activated.

You need 4 separte coax lines,1 for each sat box.

If your dish is a 18' round it only has 2 lines off it and you will need a 3X4 multiswitch.

If you have the oval dish it has 4 lines and you don't need a oval dish.

Any of your friends who have Directv and sub to the NFL Sunday ticket can bring their sat boxs to your house and just connect to the tv.The sat box and the access for that box.You can't just bring the access card it will not work in a different sat box. There are serial numbers on the sat boxes that the access card is married to that serial number.

If they don't have the Sunday ticket you can still watch the games on local channels(fox and CBS) and use your sat boxes for the out of market games on Sunday ticket.

Remember anything you buy used and has unpaid pay per view movies or porn charges must be paid before you can activate anything.

If you have to buy used go to www.2000networks.com and remember it will cost $20 from Directv for a new access card.If you buy a NEW reciever it will come with a new access card and you just call and activate. You can also get a multi switch here if you need it.

We got some time before the games start,if you need more info just ask.

hey tank, got another question, this one is actually for an opinion really. i'm probably gonna stick with the two receivers i have, maybe if we want another, then we'll go after it, who knows. but i don't have regular cable coming into my apt. i was thinking we could set up a few tvs and throw some antennas (the one's that have the metal rods) on top of them to get the regular channels (cbs, fox, nbc, abc). and from those two tvs , watch the cbs and the fox game. i know sometimes the ones that come with the tv are unreliable and you're moving them around, putting aluminum foil on top of them, whatever. do you know of any decent brands or types of those kind of antennas you could recommend or know of that get a high quality reception? thanks alot.

http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/Address.aspx

Start here and see if you can use a indoor antenna. If you can try this one

http://www.antennasdirect.com/DB2_Indoor_antenna.html the only problem is that is uhf antenna.Which proably means only the fox channel will come in.

If you only need the local channels, any friends with Directv can bring their sat box and connect to a tv.Just unhook one of your coax lines from your pvr/tivo and connect to your friend's sat box.

Or talk one your buddies into switching to Directv. If he switches you get $50 referral fee from Directv. They get the new customer discounts.Or if you add new recievers just ask your buddies to kick in a few bucks every week.

Can you put a outdoor antenna where the sat dish is?
