which hdtv dvr to get? Can't Post

i'm a bit confused

i want to get a hdtv dvr, and best buy has the current offer from Directv, but when i go to fleabay to see if i can get one cheaper, people are selling sony's, phillips and other brands (some used) that people are willing to spend more $ on than the cost of the Current offer w/rebate from Directv

are other models better? seems like decoding a hdtv signal is decoding a signal, no matter what decoder is doing the decoding, right? and the hd dvr function should be a constant also between competeing brands, right?

what am i missing? i confess that i am new to all this, but i have followed the tech from a distance for a long time.

any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks

The older models had Tivo included, the new Directv is non-Tivo.

I have had Reply TV and Tivo and they work well and are easy to use. I just go the new Direct TV R15 and it is the most difficult to use piece of junk on the planet. It was a bad deal at free. I have been using DVR's since they first came out and I know what I doing - I look forward to next Thursday because it is trash day and it will be in there!
