DISH Network 508 receiver question

I have a friend who is about to get a used DISH 508 receiver. It is a DVR unit that allows you to record up to about 80hrs of programming. The unit has an input for an external antenna (aka...rabbit ears or cable). I plan on hooking up rabbit ears for receiving local channels, but can this receiver then record the off air broadcasts or is it just for viewing?
