dvd recorder won't show video

Posted this in DirecTV thread but no response.Bought a new Toshiba dvd recorder and get audio in L1 but no video. Have tried every possible combination. I have a CRT TV and old TiVo R10. I can play dvds ok, just can't get video for recording.
I had a Panasonic dvd/vcr and it always worked fine. Very frustrating that Toshiba won't show video when attempting to record.
