Cant get 4:3 expanded aspect to work

Help! I have a Hitachi 57 inch rear projection TV that I love, but somehow my aspect settings got screwed up! I want to watch the 4:3 Expanded screen WITHOUT the borders, but it wont let me set the tv that way! It worked fine for the first two years I had the TV, and somehow the settings got screwed up.
Even more confounding is that fact that it works on the high def channels...but not regular channels. The TV shows it is set to 4:3 Expanded.....but I still get those grey borders!
Can anyone shed any light on this, how do i correct it???
