Use Sony LCD to control DTV programming

I've been unsuccessful setting up the channel list thru running AUTO PROGRAM in my new Sony LCD. Have DTV with an 8 year old Hughes receiver. Auto Program detects 4 channels: 42.1, 42.2, 42.3, 42.4. No problem with cable "off" and setting up the channel list for UHF/VHF. I'd like to use the Sony remote to control the DTV programming. Is this possible? Or will I need to keep DTV as the master?
