Edge lit / back lit big secret it seems

I'm engaged in the daunting process of buying a new LCD/LED TV and have read that back lit LCD's are a better option than edge lit. As a savvy consumer I'm trying to find the 'best' TV for the lowest price...
I'm discovering that finding out whether a particular model is back or edge lit seems almost impossible. Even the manufacturers (Samsung in this case) do not divulge the type of back lighting used.
How does one crack this secret? Can anyone recommend sites that provide this type of information, or for that matter give real reviews as opposed to just repeating the manufacturers sales pitches?
