Sony KDL-40EX503 dim screen Can't Post

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum and would be extremely grateful for some help. I have here a Sony 40" LCD TV - the KDL40-EX503. It seems to be working properly in all regards except that the screen is very, very dim. I've hunted around for information on this and come to a grinding halt. It's an old TV but not of poor quality and I'd love to restore it to its proper glory - the case is nigh-on perfect and the set is very clean.

Can anyone recommend a course of action? "Inverter" boards that will fit are cheap, probably as the set is so old, and my limited experience suggests that this might be worth trying, but I would welcome any informed advice / suggestions very gratefully.

Many thanks,

Pete.

No, not a thing. When the unit is plugged in to the wall initially the red "standby" light goes on, if I then press the power button on the remote that goes out and the green "operation" (or whatever they call it) comes on.

Thanks for replying,

Pete.

Anyone at all have advice? I've got myself a replacement inverter board and TCON board to try as an experiment ... any hints or tips on fitting / checkout would be very welcome!

Many thanks in advance,

Pete.

See what the Self Diagnostic Screen Display shows.

Keep in mind that both those boards were originally only supplied as part of the Panel.
You can use the flowcharts that indicate the replacement boards and see if doing the steps shown bring you to those same board(s) as being defective.

I would be very hesitant about changing ANY settings via the Service Menu screens.

Wonderful, thank you for that!

All I have in mind is a straight substitution test - the bits cost only a few GBP so it's not the end of the world if they don't do the job (although I'd be truly delighted if I could get the thing working properly).

The disassembly diagram alone in there is very helpful. I've fiddled with "service" settings before now and, believe me, I have no desire to repeat the experience :-)

Thanks again - much appreciated.

Pete.

This is glorious. The service manual invites me to press the "Display" button on the remote (model RM-ED035).

There isn't one. Anyone know the button to press? It's the first in the sequence <display> <five> etc.

Cheers!

Pete.

I'd suggest the Info button.

Try the center button (+) between the 4 arrows. http://helpguide.sony.net/...cmiddle_aep_all.html
If not that then I'm out of ideas.

On other Sony sets its the button that allows you to recall the TV station you're tuned to.

Well, the centre button didn't do it. Much swearing.

So I thought I'd just have a go. As usual the machine varied slightly from the info on the 'net but the video below gave me useful info on (e.g.) how the ribbon connectors get undone.

And the TV now works like an absolute charm! So thanks very much for taking the trouble to reply; I'm genuinely grateful to you. All best! :-)
