EDTV + Decoder = HDTV? Can't Post

I've been to what seems like every site on the net trying to get info. I've been told NOT to listen to sales reps. So here I go:
If you get an EDTV do you need to get a Decoder to watch DVDs at full quality? or can you plug it right in. Second I'm planning on not having a DVD player but rather just hooking up the Plasma TV to my Computer via the DVI plug. Will this work? by that I mean is the quality gonna be as good as hooking a DVD player right up to it? those are my 2 biggest concernts. I'm looking at the Gateway Plasma thats EDTV (HDTV ready) which is $2999 and the Panasonic TH-42PWD5UY that has a HDTV tuner $4959. there is a big price difference but is there really a big quality difference if I get an HDTV decoder? Crazy
thanks

EDTV can not produce a ture HDTV picture. EDTVs can accept a HD signal, but will only produce a ED picture (640p versus either 720p or 1080i). If you get a progressive scan DVD player (check your computer to find out if it is a progressive scan) you will be able to view it in 640p. A 640p picture is a major improvement over the standard picture at 640i, so look at the screen to see if the picture is good enough for your needs. You will need a HDTV decoder to receive HDTV, however, with these two monitors you will not be able to view the picture as true HD (720p or 1080I) but at best as EDTV (640p). Again, many people find the 640p picture to meet their needs, but it is not HD.

I believe the Panasonic TH-42PWD5UY is the previous generation of business monitors and does not come with a tuner and has BNC connectors instead of the consumer version which has RCA connections, I know for sure that the lastest version, TH-42PWD6UY, does not have built-in tuner. Since things are changing in HDTV standards, many people are not buying a HD set with a tuner, but buying it separate.

The person who replied first is incorrect. Any EDTV Plasma has a maximum display capability of 480i/p not 680i/p. I'm not sure where the higher numbers came from. Your EDTV Plasma has a native resolution of 852x480, it cannot have more resolution than pixels. However, that being said, I own a Samsung EDTV Plasma and HD signals look stunning. I actually have seen the Samsung next to true HD Plasma screens and the Samsung EDTV showed a better picture than most of the HD screens. It's all a matter of perception. In most cases HD Plasmas display a better HD picture than ED sets, however, once you get your set home, that stuff doesn't matter anymore. If you read any CNET review, they think the Panasonic EDTV is the best plasma on the market.

First things first A dvd player is not hd an ed plasma is perfectly matched with a dvd player. I would suggest that you not use the computer dvd player unless it is a progressive scan. An hd plasma only is good with a true hd signal for everything else ed is better dvd on an ed will look best as will normal cable. In inshort if all you watch is hd programming get an hd plasma if you watch dvds or anything else save your money and get ed. even with ed there is only a 10% picture loss when using an hd signal.
