GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV Can't Post

Hi - i live in the UK and am looking to buy a plasma TV - i have seen the goodmans GTV42P3 @ a very good price. However i cannot find a review of it anywhere on the web and am a little nervous about buying something without seeing a review. Has anyone actually bought one of these plasma tv's and what do they think of it?! If anyone has a link to a review could you post it on here . . .

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Guest] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

hi
my brother in law bought one of these ( argos ) goodmans plasma screen and when he told me the price i was a bit sceptical that it would be any good.i helped him set it up and was amazed at how good the picture looked...............after getting the wife to see it ( and waiting for the price to drop to £1299 again ) i ordered mine last friday and it,s coming this saturday.obviously this does not compare to some of the sony and panasonic plasmas i had considered but at about a grand cheaper than the sony and about £700 cheaper than the panasonic pw 6 i think it represents a fairly good bargain. it comes with 2 scart -1 s video -and a composite input and the really good thing about this is the argos guarantee ( no quibble )the only thing i didn't like much was the remote but hopefully when mine comes i will set up the sky remote to run it. like you i can't find any reviews on this plasma and the goodmans website is utter crap so hopefully you'll find my ( rather basic ) review of some help !

You can find a review in the Jan 2005 Home Cinema magazine out of WH SMith.

The only thing they faulted it on was the remote, but the said the picture was perfectly watchable and the sound was good, and it's a steal at £1500. Considering it is now £1000 at Argos, it would seem to be an even bigger bargain. Final score, 4/5.

Re: [Guest] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Ordered mine online on Sunday. Just rang the number on the automated email I got when I ordered (which said up to 28 days). They said the earliest date is showing as Jan 10th, but I should ring next Thurs to see if this has changed. I also have had trouble finding any reviews. I'm also not exactly clear on the spec. If you look at Goddmans site (alba), it only mentions one tv, but searching has uncovered a couple of models, some with 2 scar some with 4, etc., but either way it seemed worth a gamble. I found the following link for the GTV42P2, which I'm hoping is similar to the GTV42P3, from argos. http://www.t3.co.uk/...;subsubsectionid=688.

So hopefully, it will be a grand well spent. Just need to find room for it now!!!

Don't quote me coz I'm new to plasmas (5 days till mine comes), but my guess would be that the scarts always pointed down, to give you the choice of desktop or wall mount. I found the following link where they make general purpose wall mouints that they say are suitable for goodmans, so hopefully that answers the question.

Whoever gets theirs first, put a post up, I'm intrigued to know how these are for the price..

Hi,

I also ordered mine and have a delivery for Friday so am trying to find out which wall mount bracket to get.

Does anyone know if this has a seperate tuner box which takes the scart connections etc..... or are they all located on the screen.

Cheers,

Darren

Re: [mellow] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

I am led to beleive This plasma dosent have scart inputs acually on the screen itself, they are like stuck to a tuner box, what is like a sky box, now if I am not mistaken, there is no inputs on the plasma they are all on this box and the screen cant be used without it, I have just ordered one these myself, but this one was the gtv42p2, and the current is a gtv42p3, is there a difference I dont know, but they are not very keen on letting you see this before you buy, suppose if your ok with having another box with your dvd ect it wont matter, but I intended to run mine off the panasonic dvd recorder, with an optical 5.1 system separate, so in other words I only wanted the plasma panel, without the "trailer" so mine may well be on its way back before I even got it, will check it out when it arrives... LaughI've had my nice Goodmans plasma from Argus since 20th Dec, and I'm well pleased with it. The picture is great, sound is good, remote is naff. The scarts are both facing downwards, built into the bottom of the screen, so no box needed. The only critiscism is that a low hum comes from the speakers, but I have emailed Alba to try to sort it out.

I paid £999 delivered, absolute bargain, but it's now gone back up to £1199.

Regards,

Tony.

Re: [tonybrentwood] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

tonybrentwood, thanks for the info. Can you confirm the following please:

Are the scarts RGB?

What other connections are there? I am especially interested from a HDTV perspective is there a DVI input by any chance or component?

Are you able to compare the picture quality to any other screen out there?

Have you by any chance got it connected to SKY and if so what is the quality like? Especially on football?

What is wrong with the controller?

Many thanks

Re: [Steviemacca] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Steviemacca,

I'm no expert on plasma, but I love this one! The picture is in my opinion as good as plasm'a I considered buying for £2000, but I worried about buying 'unseen' from Argos, as I could'nt find one to look at in any of their stores, but I needn't have worried as they are supposed to be very good on their returns policy.

I'll quote the manual for the specs:

Screen size 42"

Screen format 16.9

Resolution 852*480 pixels

Image Formats 4:3, 16.9, Zoom, User zoom, Full screen, Auto, Non-linear

Imputs:

TV tuner (Built into screen) IEC connector, 75ohm, VHF/UHF/Hyperband

Scart 1 CVBS, RGB(pal,secam, ntsc)CVBS output

Scart 2 CVBS(pal, secam, ntsc)CVBS

CVBS RCA connectors(pal, secam, ntsc)

S-Video Mini din connector

PC DVI-Iconnector, VGA, SVGA, WVGA, XGA

Has various audio imputs/outputs

Also has a serial port for servicing only.

The remote works fine, but it is grey, a bit ugly and boring.

Hope this helps, my only gripe is with the hum from the speakers but hopefully that will be sorted soon.

Tony

Hi Darren,

If you have this model, do you experience the hum from the speakers?

Tony.

Tony,

Still waiting for mine to turn up (Friday) but managed to get a copy of the manual. I plan to use a DVD / Home Theatre system for the sound so will not use the speakers that come with the screen.

I will test it for you ASAP - under what conditions does it happen?

Have you wall mounted yours? and do the cables SCART / VGA come from the bottom? as even with the manual it's not obvious...........with a two day turn around on a bracket I need to make sure I order the right one.

Thanks Darren

Hi Darren,

Thanks for superfast reply.

The connections are all facing downwards on the bottom of the rear casing(underneath the screen). Nothing faces outwards from the back of the tv.

My speakers are mounted on the sides of the tv, currently on a stand, but my son in law has the exact same model and his is wall mounted, and the speakers hum.My son also has one, on a stand, and the speakers hum.I've emailed Alba's helpline but no response yet. I'd appreciate you letting me know if the speakers hum on yours when it arrives if you don't mind please. My Son in law bought his wall mount from Comet at a cost of £160 which I thought was quite expensive. Thay're a lot cheaper from the dealers on Ebay!

Regards,

Tony.

Thanks for the reply, I am going for a super slim wall mount from Ebay - a dealer in Glasgow.

I will test mine when it arrives and let you know - Does it do it all the time? Is it when using a particular input / volume level?

Thanks,

Darren

Hiya,

The speakers hum all the time, volume up or down, I am using the plasma hooked up to my Sky box, I don't have an aerial.

I'll be interested to know if the mount is ok when you get it, I keep looking at my Son in Law's one and it does look great on the wall!

Look forward to hearing if your set has the dreaded hum when it arrives. If Alba reply I'll post it here.

Bye,

Tony.

Hi JB,

It has an S-video din connection according to the manual, but I hav'nt used it. Argus quoted me 28 days delivery on mine, and I got it within a week of ordering it, so you might be lucky. Also if you get an Argus store card when you order you get 24 months interest free credit-what a deal!

If the speakers hum when you get it let me know please, I still havn't had a reply from Goodmasns.

Bye,

Tony.

Mine's supposed to be arriving tomorrow. One way or another it should be interesting. I've read quite a few good comments, and quite a few bad ones, especially on www.avforums.com I'm just hoping that some of the bad comments are from those that demand that top spec in everything. I just want something that looks decent and sounds decent. I'll write a post, when I've set it up. Cheers for now

Re: [JohnnyBoy] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

I started getting worried about the comments in av-forum also but if you look closely the same suspects say all plasmas are poor compared the the specific model they bought.....and you need to buy panasonic, jvc sony etc. I doubt they'd admit if you could buy a good to decent plasma for close to 1k after they'd probably bought the newest and dearest models at 3 or 4 times the price.

I'm waiting for deliverty of my goodmans in the next few days.....if its good it stays...and I've got a bargain at todays prices for £1K, if not then it goes back and I'll wait a bit longer for the prices to come down to a price I'm willing to part with. I would imagine argos are too big a company to gamble on large volumes of free deliveries then returns if the goodmans couldn't produce a decent picture/sound. I don't expect the best plasma on the market for this price but I do expect it to perform the task it was bought for....i.e. it produces clear tv pictures and sound.

I don't need high definition futuristic tvs with inbuilt everything, surround sound etc and likewise my bank account doesn't need to be emptied by 2 or 3 grand for what can only be described as a big tv. I'll part with a grand and take my chances and look forward to hearing what you think when you take delivery.
