Re: [pete007] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Pete,

The email address I've sent to is goodmans@albaplc.co.uk

Thanks for the phone number. Did you just get ring Argos customer services to get that and did you mention the return policy if required? Who is the phone number for by the way, there own engineer, or someone at Goodmans? I don't suppose they mentioned other people calling with the same problem. It's a bit crap if there are older models being flogged off as part of the same deal. I wonder if that means that I've got the earliest, as the manual just says 'GTV42P' and the picture on the front of the manual just shows the 'Goodmans' logo.

Could you do me a favour and check your hardware and software versions (Menu button, then select Info option). Mine is Hardware 'Rev03', Software '42SV02SP'. Also does the logo on the front of yours have Goodmans with 'x-pro' underneath. It could just be that I have the wrong manual.

Please let me know how you get on asap, and I will call them myself to see what they say. I do wish there was a way of resolving my issues, as we're dead set on a plasma now, but the next one up getting recommended on these forums, is the LG RZ-42PX11 at around £1350. Quite a step, and I have seen one guy commenting on faces looking like cartoons, although many more rave about it.

Cheers

hi johnny
first i did get that phone number from argos direct...they listened and then gave me that number and to tell the engineer the problem...so i will do that tomorrow...as to my version of tv when i press the (i) button i get a whole load of info....1st box DISPLAY..2nd box CALIBRE..3rd box VERSION which reads:sp642_lg01_t4_l6b 1.6 lg42_m1 and also says generated 8/12/04 at 03.10......but by judging with the 2 other box they just seem to be set to factory settings so will as this also tomorrow....the front cover of my manual has a picture of tv,the GTV42P4 number with Goodmans at top...so it does look like argos/goodmans are sending out different versions.....hope to hear from you again.....cheers pete

Re: [pete007] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Pete,

From your last comment it does look like they've fobbed me off with an old model. It's difficult for me to call them from work, so I sent a mail late last night about the issues I have with my set and the fact they seem to be sending out different models, mine seemingly being an old one. While I was on their site I read the didtance selling section which says

"

Distance Selling Regulations
Under the Distance Selling Regulations, you have a right to cancel your order for any item purchased on this website for a full refund. This does not apply to items personalised or made to your specification; audio/video recordings or software that you have unsealed; items such as earrings and cosmetics that, by reason of their nature, cannot be returned; perishable goods (e.g. food and flowers), and periodicals/magazines.

To cancel, you can email us or write to us (see contact us for details) within seven days of delivery of your item(s), quoting your order number. You must take reasonable care of the item(s) and must not use them. Item(s) may be returned to an Argos store, or we can arrange collection free of charge."

So, as my 7 days is up on Friday, I will have to get the situation resolved by then.

I'm still quite confused as to what I want to do. I was watching certain terrestrial programs last night, admittedly through a not too good co-ax connection as my SKY is still down, and the 'painting by numbers' was still present at times especially on peoples faces. But then I stuck my favourite Linkin Park DVD on to unwind before bedtime, where there were lots of bright lights, and lots of close up facial shots, and there were no problems. All very frustrating

More to come...........

Hi folks,

Very interesting to read the posts about returns to Argus, on my reciept it clearly says that 'All large domestic appliances are excluded from the guarantee'. I hav econtacted Argos about the email from Alba telling me that a known fault is causing my speaker hum, and I've asked for a replacement rather than a home visit to fit a new cable inside the screen. The tv is only 1 month old, and I do not want to have it messed with, so they(Argos) are going to collect the original one and replace with a new one-not bad service really. There are two other members of my family who bought these tv, they will probably return theirs when I tell them the outcome-expensive for Alba PLC eh?

Regards,

Tony.

Tony,

Apart from you speaker hum, have you had any issues if just viewing through normal TV aerial with the 'painting by numbers effect' Sorry to keep banging on about this, but I'm really hoping this is one that can be resolved as to return the Goodmans and get another plasma that has been recommended on the forums, is a fair increase in price

Hi John and everybody,

Yes, I get the 'painting by numbers effect' sometimes, but I can live with that for the price. This time next year plasma's will drop in price to a reasonable level, and then I can choose one with a better picture, but I'm happy for the moment. I only use my with my sky box, I don't have a TV aerial.

I think it's easy to get used to just how great a plasma is compared to a normal tv (my old one was 32"), until a friend or neighbour visits who has not got plasma. Inariably it knocks their socks off! I'm looking for a glass cabimet to stand it on, but I can't force myself to pay £300+ for one, anybody know where I can get a reasonably priced one?

Thanks,

Tony.

Cheers Tony, maybe when I get my SKY back on Friday, I won't notice the effect as much

2 other quick questions that I've asked others. Did you take note of your particular model. Pete has a manual for the P4 model, and his on screen menus are different to mine. My manual is just the P model, which I guess is the oldest even though I've only had it 5 days.

Also, assuming you have yours in 'Auto' mode, have you noticed that sometimes 4:3 transmissions get lopped off at the top and bottom, in order to fill the screen horozontally, and other times it stretches at the edges. The second one is the one I have the issue with. I had complained about the 'lopping off' initially, but the more I get to know about plasmas, I guess unlike my old CRT, which would fill the screen vertically and leave 'bands' at the side, in 4:3 mode, with plasmas this is not done, to prevent screen burn

Cheers

Hi,

Looks like I have the P3 model. I'd be interested to know how different these models are... My manual says P3, and page 12 refers to wall mounting.

I have never seen a painting by numbers eff3ect unless I am playing back a very low bitrate signal - this makes sense, you're likely to see artifacts at this size. I see the same painting by numbers effect when outputting the signal to an LCD monitor. The imagte quality for DVD input and monitor input is surprisingly high - much higher than a Sony plasma I had to use for demonstration purposes a few years ago.

Regarding the display size switching, for me (using a TiVo and Pace 4000 box and Telewest) most channels change fine. I do have a problem with one or two channels specifically - Living TV is one. The image size seems to be something it doesn't know how to properly deal with - but in my opinion, none of the options seems to go with this image size correctly. I haven't had time to investigate, but I've seen complaints on other forums about this effect with some channels and TV systems.

Cheers

Hi Tony,

I have been looking round for a glass stand for my Goodmans when it arrives and was also reluctant to spend £300+ on one. Had a look round and found a Kenmark one in John Lewis' - they come in 3 sizes but havent got the exact details. I went to have a look at one at JL in Bluewater and they seem a good buy, obviously not as good as Alphason but then youre not paying the £300+ for them. I opted for the KM-TS02M @ £79.50, I am hoping it is wide enough but due to not having enough space for the 01M version went for it anyway. The tubular parts are polished chrome as a opposed to the matt finish on most others stands but still looks good.

Check them out for yourself if you can, although they can be ordered online from JohnLewis.com

What can I say about Argos. 10/10. I mailed them at midnight last night. They mailed back early this morning to say my mail had been passed to their TV department, who then called my wife early this afternoon. She explained our problems, and there are definitely issues with ours, so like you they've ordered one for 28 days for us. This time we're getting the P4 model, not the old one we have now.

They also said the 16 day return will also apply to the new one when they come and swap. So overall can't complain. Let us all know how you get on with the engineer, and if he does 'tweak' yours, perhaps you could let us all know what he does

Cheers for now

Hi Johnnyboy,

My manual is for the P3 model, the logo on the front of the set says Goodmans Xpro. I'm not able to comment really on the screen sizing, I've been reading the posts about 4:3 and 16:9, I havn't a clue what anybody's talking about- but I am a bit dim with hi tech euipment. I've got mine on auto, and it seems to change itself automatically to fill the screen.

I phoned argos to check when they're collecting mine and bringing replacement, they say they won't have any more stock until mid February, so they must be selling well. Oh well, I'll have to live with my hum until then.

Bye,

tony.

Hi Chenzo,

Thanks for the info about Kenmark stands, they look the business to me, and their cheaper!

I'm not sure if the KM TS02M is wide enough for the goodmans, I've measured the base of the stand on the tv and its800mm(31.5"), and that's the exact measurement of the stand. Also although it says it can take 130 kg, the glass top is only 8mm, and all the other plasma stands I've seen for 42" screens have 10mm glass on the top. Kenmark do another stand, KM-TS01M, which is 1140 wide, with 10mm glass, but it's £199- still a lot cheaper than the alpha. I'll pop along to Bluewater to have a look.

Cheers for info,

Tony.

Hi Pete,

I've been a bit concerned about the 2 scarts (rather than the 4 as published in the catalogue). I popped into Maplin and they have a 1 to 4-way AUTO scart box which looks fair for about £15. I have no experience of it or whether it will work with this GTV42P3 cos I don't have mine delivered yet. I'll be giving it a try when mine arrives though as 2 scarts won't be enough.

Don't know if this helps but thought I'd mention it Smile

Well, seems I have been caught in the Argos web of BS. Got a call today telling me that they are unable to supply my screen for at least 2 to 3 weeks after the original 'within 7 days of 19th January 2005' they quoted me after chasing them last week. When I questioned this they claimed they are having trouble getting the screens from the manaufacturer and when I asked if it could be longer than this they said 'mmm, could be a bit longer'.

What a poor show, ordered my set on the 30th December with a 21 day maximum delivery time and now it looks like I won't be getting it until mid February! Seems I am going ot be without a main TV now as I have promised my old CRT set to someone at the end of next week - what a joke.

Has anyone else spoken to Argos Customer Services and had the same update, would be interested to know anyone else who has been 'fobbed' off?

Maplin online have scart connectors. Try http://www.maplin.co.uk/...urce=14&doy=13m1

There are 3 options in the range try cat number L06BB (2 scart), L07BB (3 scart) or L08BB (5 scart). there are other ways of doing it too. Let me know how you get on Smile

Incidentally, I got a call from Argos today. They have delivery delays. I was originally promised 1th Jan and they're now pushing that out by 2 weeks Frown

Anyone had any success with wall mounting this unit?

Re: [harry7623] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

To be honest, I wouldn't really recommend the switchless multi-SCART adaptors, as you often get signal muting if you have several input scarts plugged into one output - for example, when I tried one and input frolm a Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Gamecube and set top box, I found that if the Dreamcast was connected, even when off, the right sound channel didn't play at the same volume as the left when watching TV from ther set tolp box. Similarly, having the PS2 reduced the green level, etc.

What I would recommend is the ones with switches and some AV inputs - you can work wonders with these. They usually have an A, B, C input switch and some C->A, B->A selectors for AV etc. you can select what inputs you want to use, you can chain them together for loads of inputs, and you don't lose quality. It provides a useful hookup to my surround sound system too, and passed through RGB from each input.

My setup means I have a primary switcher, which selects from 'Set top box', 'DVD player' or 'consoles' - 'consoles' is the input from a second switcher, from which I now switch between Gamecube, Xbox and PlayStation 2. This means only my GTV42's RGB input is being used, and I get fully RGB quality out of everything.

I got my switchers from Game and Tandy - first one, then the other. Though they both look different, they work identically and have the same inputs/outputs. One is a B-Tech, the other I can't see from where it's situated...

Re: [pete007] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello all. Been following this thread with interest. Ordered my screen on 27th Dec, it turned up last Monday 10th Jan. Unpacked it, mounted it on the cabinet (my plasterboard walls would never take the weight!!) and plugged it in. I got the P4 variant. Switched it on and it ran through the tuning procedure without problems. Watched Neighbours happily then turned it off to standby. Went out for an hour, came back and turned it on, and it didn't work. Was getting the same blank screen as Pete007 but no sound. TV wouldn't respond to input from the remote control, so wasn't able to change channels, turn it to standby etc. Unplugged it from the wall, left it overnight and tried it in the morning. Worked first time. A little wary now, I turned it off to standby, turned it on again and lo, got the same blank screen but also sound (as seen by Pete) and was able to change channel, but no pic present at all apart from the impression that it was lit but just showing a black screen. By lunchtime Argos were sending out a replacement one and taking this one back. New one "anticipated" to arrive next Weds 19th. Luckily kept my old tv so I can use that in the meantime, but even at 32" its just not the same!!

Other observations:

Also get the painting by numbers effect on aerial connection but not cable (ntl).
Didn't read the manual but set it up to be widescreen anyway cos that's how the signal comes from ntl.
Sound output goes direct from the RGB at the back to my Technics stereo, so no issue with humming speakers. Will try them out anyway when the new one turns up, just to see if they do.
Got the blurring when someone moved quickly across the screen, but didn't have it long enough for the plasma to bed in!!!

Will let you know my full impressions when the replacement turns up (currently stuck with a HUUUUGE box with the old one in, and in my 1 bed flat it blocks out something wherever I put it) but my first impression was "what a monster!" followed by "everyone will be soooooo jealous!!"

Re: [pete007] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

No worries Pete. I have 2 inputs coming out of the ntl box and going to the telly - firstly the plain old co-ax which goes into my video (along with a tv signal, both joined to the vcr by a splitter) and also using the TV out SCART connection. I didn't really get the chance to check out the ntl co-ax signal but the SCART signal was pretty much perfect. I use the coax connection from the ntl box because it means I can 1) record from ntl and 2) have a "normal" channel (usually 6) rather than have to fiddle around with AV buttons on remote controls. Has to be said though, the picture quality between the 2 shows a marked improvement in quality over SCART.

Sadly I can't use mine at the moment as the pic never came back after the first reset. I find it pretty incredible (and incredibly stupid) that you can't use the stand-by in case it causes problems. That's like saying "don't use the brakes on your car, they might not work"!!! Think I'll also keep this one but wait for a year for the prices to become more reasonable on other brands, then ebay this one and buy me something more........reliable.

Re: [Shocked Pants] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi

The whole standby thing sounds crazy... is this specific to the P4 or all models? Are Goodmans saying that everytime the TV is turned off, we should use the on/off switch underneath?

I might give them a call - I'm also confused about the SCART input selection options in the menus, they aren't described at all. It might be worth comparing manuals for these TVs - I'll scan my GTV42P3 manual and make it available for comparison...

RE My SCART setup - all my devices are connected to the RGB capable SCART (SCART 1 I think).

I have two SCART splitters with switches. I'm also thinking of getting one of the new B-Tech Quintro splitters which has a remote.

My first splitter has input A = Set Top Box output (well, set top box->TiVo->output), input B = DVD player output, input C = output from second splitter (the 'consoles' switch).

My second splitter is in order of console usage - input A = Xbox output, input B = GameCube output, input C = PlayStation 2 output.

The first switcher's has an AV audio output which goes to my surround splitter, giving me ProLogic II performance out of everything by default. Additionally, my XBox is connected to my surround's optical input, and my DVD player is connected to the surround system via digital coaxial. It wasn't worth hjooking up the PS2's optical output because hardly anything uses it. The GameCube only offers ProLogic II.

Each splitter has a 'RGB on/off' switch, and the quality is noticable between the two. I would say though, that I don't know if it's worth hooking up a set top box output via RGB, because a 42 inch screen really shows up any MPEG artifacts. So, my next step, when I've had a rest from all this, is to connect my set top box/TiVo to SCART 2 and then connect my TiVo's sound output to the ound input on the first SCART switcher for the common surround sound output.

The Quintro has five inputs and is remote selectable, so I think I'll be getting one of these!
