Re: [andymac] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

Yes, I'm not having the display problems. What's being fed into my P3 is what I'm seeing on the display, from the SCART (RGB - TiVo, Pace DTV4000, Xbox, GameCube, PS2, DVD player) and DVI (PC) inputs.

I'm getting a replacement due to the buzz on Wednesday, I'll let you know what I find. At the moment I'm quitte concerned about that might turn up..

Thats good to hear. I wonder if, as others have implied, there is a significant difference between the P3 and P4 models? Did you have to adjust any of the settings or use the default (or preset options like 'rich')?

Anymac,

Sorry I meant to mention in my post last night, I don't know if this option is available on the P4, but on the one I have, from memory (I'm at work now), if you bring up the Menu, then select Display, then select 'User colour temp', this has Red, Green and Blue selections. Never tried adjusting them myself. If I remember tonight, I'll look in the manual

Cheers

JohnnyBoy

Hmm - sounds like the P3 and P4 menu's are different. on The P4 there are brightness, contrast and colour sliders. Then a noise setting and another (whose name escape me now - at work too) which switches between the user settings of the above and some predefined - natural, rich etc. There is no 'colour temp' although the manual refers to a 'tint' setting if and only if NTSC is used. I'll try to take some screen shots of the menus this evening and post

2: Where o9n earth can you get one now for £1000?

Hi,

From what I can tell, P3 and P4 are quite different. The remote control is different, the mnuals are very different and describe some quite different features. I posted a few comparisons in this thread a couple of weeks back. One concern is that the P4 may not have nonlinear scaling, which works quite well on the P3 when expanding 4:3 images to fill the screen. Can anyone with a P4 confirm if they have this? Again, I've referred to what appears to be a scan of a P4 manual I'm referring to, and my own P3 manual. I mentioned page numbers earlier on in this thread.

There is DNC on the P3 to help overcome the effects caused by low bitrate MPEG stream playback on the large display.

Thanks - I'll look back in the thread to see your posts... I tried them a while back and was unable to get the links to work but I'll try at lunch time. The P4 doesn;t have DNC afaik, just the 'noise' presets - soft, sharp, sharpest etc. I hope my mpeg streams aren't low bitrate... TiVo trial yesterday was on high and best quality setting and the DVD was outputing on RGB from a 'real' disk, not a compressed one. As for Non linear scaling - there is a ZOOM function but it is a bit hit and miss - screen display can be switched between auto, 4:3, 16:9, subtitle, letterbox and zoom. Time team last night (which I normally watch in 'wide screen' on my old panasonic crt) seemed to only run watchable on letterbox - so too the dvds I've tried so far.

To but the colour problem into context - the green fields we saw at one point in an old time team epsidoe yesterday my 7 year old son thought was the sea as the colour was 'patchy' and 'rolling' so much. Thats when we realised it probably wasn;t just us expecting too much from the picture!

Just talked to Argos once again and they said they are replacing them now with a new model which apparently is free from problems. They are waiting on new deliveries from Goodmans. When I asked about this new model she mentioned she couldn't tell me if it was the P4 or a new model.

This one will be my third attempt from them for a working one so here's hoping.

Hi,

When did they call yuou? I'm currently sitting at home waiting for my replacement, it is due by 12.

If they cancel now or don't deliver a P4 I'm not going to be very happy!

Mine just arrived. It's a new P4 (as far as I can tell, haven't seen any signs indicating it isn't yet).

I have yet to unpack it fully, I'll do that when I come home from work this evening...

Re: [tonybrentwood] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

It arrived around 11:10. It was definitely a P4 - they brought the smaller speaker box in first, and I made a point of checking this before they brought the other box in.

The box had not been retaped. It looked fairly loosely taped, but this had been it's first taping.

I opened the speaker box and looked inside, as with the P3 it contains the speakers and the stand in to smaller boxes. They all looked fine, properly bagged and sealed up, etc.

The main unit looked okay wen I glanced in, and the remote control was bagged up properly.

Looks like I'll spend my birthday evening getting it rigged up - I have to say I'm a bit nervous about it - compared to the experiences some people had with P3, mine was actually a very nice unit...

Sorry for no update on my experience. We (SWMBO) contacted Argos on Monday afternoon - they are replacing the P4 we recieved next Tuesday. As soon as my wife started describing the 'funny colours, like contour lines' the woman at Argos just said "we'll send a replacement". Guess they have been primed, looks like they will rue the day that added it to the catalogue!

Hope your P4 is ok, will be good to hear your comparison as you previously had a P3...

Well, no phone call to say otherwise, so hopefully ours is coming tomorrow. Luckily Mrs. C is on maternity, so she'll be in all day if (when) they come. So, will be packing up the old one after we've walloped Chelsea tonight (well I can dream about it, and dream about getting a TV with no probs tomorrow).

If it turns up, will post tomorrow night to say Thumbs up, down, or whatever

Cheers

Re: [JohnnyBoy] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi!

Right, now for my verdict...

Firstly, JohnnyBoy - I wouldn't pack mine until I knew I had a P4. The result was that when this was verified, they loaded the P3 onto the van and then slid the box onto it, stuffing the packaging in around it. Thiis might make it easier!

Right, NOW for my verfict...

I have now unpacked and installed the P4. My wife is now watching Corrie on it and I can see tyhe TV whilst I type this in on the notebook.

This P4 is brand new, there were no marks on it to indicate it had ever been used, or the stand added, etc.

ON THE WHOLE, I thiknk the P4 is better - and I had a good P3.

Firstly - the remote - it is different. It is more functikonal and has more buttons - my wife thought it swas slightly 'cheaper' feeling, but the difference is very small. The shape is slightly different in the end - some may prefer the P3s, some the P4s.

The stand - this connects differently (it is easier to mount) and looks a little different - it is more 'solid' than the other bar type design. I think if someone had a P4 first they may prefer this one, and the other way round for P3 owners. One problem - one of the little rubber pads fell off, meaning when I was moving the display on my nice new media centre, it put a couple of scratches on the surface... so check this when installing!

The P4 has a DVI and a VGA input - the cable is VGA-VGA. The P3 has DVI only, and a VGA-DVI lead.

Now for turning it on...

There is no main unit noise. There is no speaker buzz.

Widescreen switching is CORRECT. It is now doing exactly what I expect it to - 4:3 is shown as 4:3 withj bars on the outside - the P3 was nonlinear scaling most things, and had a problem with Bravo and Living TV somehow. However, the P4 does not have nonlinear scaling - one thing I will moss, but I',m over it.

This has true picture in picture for the different inputs, and is a lot more customisable. The P3 only PIPed the DVI output I think.

I need to spend more time with the menus, but they are less confusing than the P3, and look better. The confusing SCART input options are gone - good, they were never documented anyway.

How do you get the software version info up?

Picture quality - the temperature settings are different by default, but the display is at least as good as my P3. I'd say slightly better. I didn't have Painting By Numbers before and I don't have it now - a concern of mine! It looks like the algorithm for removing MPEG stream artifacting is slightly better, so some may like it more for this alone.

All in all, Argos saw me right...

I'll post more if I've forgotten anything, if anyone has any queries, let me know and I'll answer them here.

Cheers,

Gareth

Oh - there are a few buttons like vol up/down, channel up/down, menu etc on the front of the P4, the P3 didn't have this.

And I like the blue LED at the front when it's on :-)

One thing I notice by its absence, when I used to go through the menu structure of the TiVo, the TiVo's 'swishy' menu effect almost seemed like frames were being dropped on the P3, this doesn't happen on the P4. I suspect there's a slight difference in the motion compensation algorithm and this is a little better now...

Hi,

WHat is the (i) button on the left? I'm not sure I know what you mean...

I definitely don't have painting by numbers, my input is also fully RGB - I've just noticed both SCART inputs are full RGB! P3 only had RGB on input 1...

Gareth, I'll defintely take your advice and not pack it up until they come with a P4. Thanks for the confidence boost of what you now have and the updates on the buttons on the front. Please, please, tell me the On/Off button is not stuffed up the back on the P4.

Hi!

Unfortunately, the physical on/off switch is in basically the same place as the P3... though hopefully you wouldn't need to use it. I've only turned the P4 off once so far, and it came out of standby fine. There is no noise or buzz to indicate any difference between completely off and standby other than the LED which shines red.

Out of interest, the positions of the SCART and DVI inputs are reversed - looking at the display, the DVI connector is now on the left and SCART on the right.

Oh, the black surround looks slightly larger on the P4, though the actual panel size appears to be the same.

Cheers,

Gareth

Re: [Gatchers] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, here goes, initial impressions on my new P4. Bearing in mind my previous one was a P, it wasn't even marked P3, and oh, when i say 'was' I still have it. The Argos guy said he wasn't down to collect one, so at the moment we have 2 42" plasmas, we're sooooo posh!

In the main, I can echo a lot of Gareths comments, the connectivity is better, navigation is better, on my other one that menu system was really cheap, this is slick and sharp looking, and moving from source to source is a breeze. PIP is good. The style of the new stand in that it hides the cables is good, although it does mean it's now impossible to reach the On/Off switch, other than going round the back, very strange design, why not put a subtle little button next to the others on the front?

The Auto detection of the screen format works perfectly, it was so annoying before.

OK, the negatives so far.

1.Mine has a whistling buzzy noise from the back of the unit unfortunately.

2. With the settings I currently have the picture isn't as crisp as I would have liked, even for a 'cheap' plasma.

3. Whilst the famous 'painting by numbers' is much better on the whole, I still get it at times, especially on moving faces.

4. Grass on football matches in particular is again much better, but still often looks like it's been painted.

So, apart from the noise, which I guess an engineer could come and sort out, I don't want to rule the TV out just yet, as it's early doors, and things might settle down, but it would have to be better than it is at present for me to keep it.

Gareth, as we seem to have the same TV now, and you report no probs on yours, even with what used to be one of the worst on mine, i.e. Corrie, could you post your settings, and I will set mine up the same, to see what impact it has

Cheers

John

Hi,

I started off by using the 'Rich' profile, which I think was default. My observations were based on this profile, but I don't think this is one I'll be using, so I'll probably be playing about with the settings to get them the way I want them over the weekend.

Cheers,
