I don't like any of the default settings, currently, 50, 75, and 40 work for me for brightness, contrast and colour respectively.

That doesn't mean this is perfect, it's working for what's on TV right now :-)

If anything, I would guess that if the system tries to gain too much on colour, you might get a painting by numbers of banding effect.

JohnnyBoy, let me know what settings make the effect worse or better for you...

Cheers,

Gareth

Hi all,

Well, true to their word Argos delivered a brand new sealed P4 and collected my P3. What a difference! The set up is easier, menu's clearer, the speakers are brushed aluminium instead of silver cloth, the stand hides the cables and the instruction manual is easy to understand. The sound is great, picture is fantastic and there is no hum or other noise to detract from my viewing pleasure. Not only this, but I have got £25 from Argos because I complained about the delivery service! My faith in Argos is restored.

Tony.

Tony, really pleased for you that your TV is perfect in all departments. Just miffed that I can't say the same. Apart from the buzz that hasn't gone away after a week, I was hoping everything else would have settled down now, but it hasn't no matter what settings I use. As I've said before DVD, is very good overall, with only the odd issue with the colours. However, its SKY and playback on my SKY+ that gives us the biggest problems. So, whether it's an incompatibility between this TV and SKY+, it doesn't matter. Most of what we watch is via SKY. So, unfortunately it looks like it's going to have to go, and I'm going to have to go round the shops with a DVD that I've recorded a soap and some footie on, which shows problems on this TV, but hopefully I can find one in my budget where it all looks good.

I'll keep everybody posted, and well done to those who've paid their 1000, and are now completely satisfied.

Hi!

I think regarding the buzz alone you've got a problem, let alone anything else. You could call Argos to arrange another replacement, or perhaps go for a Goodmans engineer who can actually view your picture and take steps from here.

I've played about with settings (only contrast, brightness and colour), and it looks like these settings are a digital effect applied to each frame as it is received. The reason I say this is that if you pause the picture using the TV pause facility on the GTV42P4, changing the settings doesn't have an effect on the paused frame.

If this is the case, then brightness really needs to be set to maximumn in order to maintain the full dynamic range of the image, and then for colour and contrast to be reduced to compensate. I'd suggest giving this a go for people with colour problems to see if it helps.

It is possible that some models of Set Top Box have a lower output rate and that this TV doesn't handle it well at the default settings.

If I have brightness set really low, I'm pretty sure I'm seeing what you are calling the painting by numbers effect. The brightness value changes this the most.

Interestingly, if all this is the case, in theory it could be cured, at least partially, depending on the platform, with a software update.

Cheers,

Gareth

Thanks for the tip Gareth, I've tried your suggestion of whacking the brightness up and adjusting down the contrast and colour, and it has improved things slightly but it's still not a satisfactory picture (watching Eng v Holland). Tony, can you tell me all the picture settings you're using to get your picture, I want to try everything I can before I send it back for good

Hi again,

I've not touched the settings, I'm not good with all this technology malarky, the settings are all as they come from the factory. If you tell me how I'll look what the settings are. My son and son in law have decided after seeing the P4 to return their P3's as they like the P4. I'll let you know if they are ok when they are changed.

By the way, could you imagine Tiny replacing all these plasma's- If the computer side of the company is anything to go by, there'd be no chance!

Bye,

Tony.

Cheers Tony, but the factory settings will be the same on yours , as when mine arrived, and they were much worse on mine than they are with the settings I have now. Do you mind me asking what do you view on yours, in terms of TV transmissions, do you have SKY, as that is where my problems are worst. Having said that watching terrestrial TV through a normal ariel is very poor (It's fine on my old CRT TV).

I forget how long I have to return it to Argos with 'no quibble' but I need to decide very soon

Cheers

Hi again,

I only have standard sky, no TV aerial at all.Its maybe because I'm not that technological, but the picture seems fine to me, and absolutely blows my old standard 32" widescreen away. I've said before that whenever anybody visits and sees the picture for the first time they seem to be blown away. A friend(?) was telling me how great the picture was until he noticed the 'Goodmans' logo, then started telling me how much better Panasonic plasma's are- I think it's a branding thing, I wear Matalan jeans, he would'nt even use them to polish his car(has to be top of the range of course-lol)

I think you have 16 days no quibble return with Atgos, although on the top of my receipt it says 'large domestic items excluded from the 16 day guarantee. I've not tried returning, just exchanging.

Hope this helps,

Tony.

Well, apart from the whistling/buzzy noise I'm getting, which does need sorting, it's starting to look more like the problem is down to an incompatability between my TV and my SKY+ box, which is rather worrying. What if the effects I'm getting are the same on any different branded plasma, if I send this one back. As all 3 of you seem happy now, I'm going to have to quickly leg it round the shops this weekend with a DVD recorded from SKY+ to see if I get the same effect regardless of the plasma. I'm getting really fed up now, all I ever wanted was to plug my SKY+ box in, and watch my programs at a decent quality of picture.

Cheers for the feedback everybody, more to come..........JohnnyBoy

Hi all, I have now had my Plasma ( P4 model ) for just over a week now, at first I had the painting by numbers but this has now settled down, the main problem I have is what I would call a vapour trail making the picture almost impossible to watch, especially watching football as the fast movement of the players/ball everything just seems blurred, I contacted Argos and they gave me a number for Goodmans ( 0870 8730090 ), I was told this was a special helpline set up due to the high volume of complaints, my plasma is now been taken away for what they called a software update, the engineer said he will be fitting a new circuit board, but as this is the first one he has had to repair he could not say if it would be successful. I hope to get the plasma back by Sunday, unfortunately if it is not ok it will be getting returned...I will keep you posted on the outcome.

Hi, I know it's no consolation to you, but at least it's not just me with the whistling and picture problems on the P4. A number of us have been posting for a while now on this thread, and we've all had our old Goodmans replaced with the P4, so at least we're now comparing like for like. It seems that the other guys are happy in the main with theirs now, but like you mine is just not acceptable, no matter what settings I adjust. As I've said before, playing bought DVD's through my cheapo Comet DVD recorder, is pretty good, you get the odd very minor 'painting by numbers', but you would hardly notice it. However, SKY+ is poor in this department. AS nobody else seems to have an issue, I'm wondering if me and you have got the same 'duff' version of the P4, or is it just not compatible with my SKY+ box (which works fine on my CRT tele) I've had this replacement a week now, and it's not settled down. So, I'm going to ring Argos and explain the situation, to see what they say. After all, if I can't get this sorted, I'm looking at havong to fork out another £500 on another plasma potentially, as I don't want to go back to my chunky 32" CRT tv.

I'll post how I get on

JohnnyBoy - I'm still having the same picture (painting by numbers) quality problems as you. Our 2nd P4 arrived Tuesday and if anything it's worse (but may just be perception). We use it 90% for watching Sky thru TiVo. I've tried Sky straight to the panel but no difference. We watched King Arthur on DVD last night - on a 'not cheap' DVD player (Pioneer) and it was awful. The best picture comes from my Windows Media Center connected to the VGA. Still pictures are fine, but still get some painting by numbers on recorded video. I've been looking at NEC panels (I'll get thelink when I can find it) on the AV forums, but as you say - talking about £1500+ to essentially get the same as we were supposed to get with the Goodmans. Previous poster talked about getting a softwar upgrade/board upgrade. Will be interested to know if this makes a difference but don't think I'd be happy with it being taken away - would want a replacement with it already fitted.

At the moment I think we're going to give in and wait...

Re: [andymac] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Just called Argos, to be fair, very good again. They offered another replacement, or an engineer, so I've said that another replacement could just have the same problem, so I'm happy for an engineer to come and have a look. Luckily my wife is on maternity at the minute. It would be a different story if I kept having to take time off. This is the last chance though, I'm not messing around any more after this. As usual I'll keep everybody posted. The whole thing is even more confusing now that AndyMac is reporting all the same problems (actually it does sound worse than mine). I had thought it might just be my SKY+ box, but it looks like it might be pointing back towards the Goodmans just not being able to cope with certain transmissions, that a CRT (and hopefully other plasmas) can.

Cheers

hi
can i ask why they had to take your plasma away?
when i called for a engineer they came out and just repaired it in the house....granted they were there for over an hour but this was to fix the stand by problem....was yours to fix high pitch noise as tonight mine has just started this?the goodmans helpline says they send a engineers with replacement board and do it there and then your repair sounds dodgy mate.....anyone else had repair done from goodmans??

Hi, I was told the job had to be sub-contracted, the engineer said as this had been his first time doing this type of repair would rather take it away and set up on his workbench !!!!! I would agree that it sounds like I have had a dodgy repair, I`m just fed up with the situation now. I dont have any problems with high pitch noises just a sort of blurring picture, it also does not matter if I use sky or DVD the result is the same. Going out today to look for another but TV definately not a goodmans!!!!!!

We've just been to look in Currey's and Comet (Ok, I know not the best place to look at) and even the more expensive screens (Sony etc) seemed to have the paint by number/colour blurring effect - but not to the same extent... and these are with common inputs to dozens of screen and therefore low quality. Notably there were no panasonics or NEC's which seem to be the one's raved about over on AV forums and now available for £1300-£1600 at various places. Think I'll take more tiem this time to decide what to do...

Re: [andymac] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi

Ive been watching this forum with a lot of interest of late, i myself purchased a goodmans GTV42 plasma in the new year and was delivered a P4 version.

As with everyone else i was getting the colour banding\painting by numbers effect especially on sky broadcasts, so i complained and they sent me a replacement P4.

The replacement was a bit better and some channels are fine, bbc 1 and all the main channels etc, but on some SKY films, american programmes (star trek, 24 etc) and on some sports channels the painting by numbers effect is particulary bad.

I do however have to say that playing a DVD is mostly quite good and i use the rich setting as it seems to hide the colour banding effect a bit.

Anyway i didnt want to send the plasma back, go out buy a more expensive one and have exactly the same happen, so i went round to different stores and asked to watch sky playing thro the plasmas in the shop, In all cases not one store was able to show me a plasma with sky playing thro it (funny that!!!!).

Unpreturbed i went home and recorded 2 programmes onto DVD that i had found to be of extremly low quality with terrible "painting by numbers" effects, One was the film "virtuosity" with denzil washington which had really poor smoke effects and peoples faces looked computer generated and the other was womens golf from a sports channel where the grass looked either computer generated or coloured in by a 2 year old.

I took these DVDs to currys and comet and asked them to play them on various plasmas.

To be honest nearly all of them suffered with the painting by numbers effect, some worse, some a little better.

A £1400 LG model was absolutely terrible as was a £1700 samsung, and the store sales people couldnt believe how bad they looked because all they see is the "special" DVD playing that the store supplies as a demo.

I have to say tho, out of all of those i tried the only Plasma that virtually eliminated all the "painting by numbers" effects was the Panasonic TH42PE30 and that produced a spot on picture.

So at the moment im unsure what to do, do i keep the GTV42P4 whose picture i have to say is far better than a lot of the more expensive screens in the shop or do i send it back and invest another £1500 and get the panasonic (£2500 with stand in comet). I think ive got a week to decide before my 16 day return runs out.

Hope this helps and any thoughts would be most welcome.

Sounds expensive!

I've been looking at these... http://www.avforums.com/...wthread.php?t=188046

http://www.av-sales.co.uk/...nic_th-42pwd7bk.html

http://www.avforums.com/...wthread.php?t=183227

Obviously one shouldn't just go on other peoples views (something re-iterated at length on AV forums) but the consensus does seem to be that the Pansonics have the edge. We watched Scrappy races on the P4 yesterday and were surprised that it looked ok (recorded on TiVO from Sky). But then in the evening watched D and Pascoe (not attempting to spell the first name!) again via TiVO and Sky and it was dreadful. BUT again these were night time shots with smoke/fog which looked bad.

Pretty sure ours is going back, but as you not sure what to replace with...

Looked at your links, quite helpful, the panasonic looks prob like that way to go for me but not sure about the media box etc or do i need to purchase scart cards for the back?? perhaps i will ring av sales and ask their advice.

Although im unsure what to do, i think i will prob send the GTV back as i find whenever i watch TV now im always looking out for that painting by numbers effect etc and i cant conentrate on what im supposed to be watching

Cheers for the feedback about Currys, Comet, etc. Looks like you've just saved me some leg work. I've just backed off, a copy of Emmeredale and Blackburn v Norwich to DVD from my SKY+ box, to wander round the shops with, as these showed the picture at it's worst (Checked that it looked ok on my CRT tv first). I'm afraid I definitely can't live with things the way they are. If it means spending double the money at some point, then i'll have to start saving.
