For anyone who is interested, I've now connected up my DVI cable to the PC and it reports the Goodmans as being a Sangyo display...

(No - not keeping it, but just testing the DVI before it gets packed away)

I guess I'm taking a little more time over my order this time around. I'd be interested in how you rate the Panny (can you post thoughts when you get them on the post goodmans thread i created when it arrives?). BTW I have ordered a 'setup' dvd (avia) from a link on av forums. May be worth checking this out (do a google on avia/dre and find the link into av forums.

Re: [andymac] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

The Argos guys came to pick up our original P model today, they said they'd had so many problems with the P, P3 and P4 it's unbelievable. As to the P4 we still have, an engineer was supposed to call on Monday to discuss fixing our problems. Never happenned, so when I called today to find out what was going on, it eventually transpired that someone had sent my request to the 3rd part repair company, but dated it 2004, so the request was cancelled due to it having a date from over a year ago, muppets. So, the engineer is now coming on Monday. I've nothing to lose as I double checked with Argos that this takes me over my 16 days, and they said because I reported the fault last week it doesn't invalidate me getting my money back. Howwever, if they can't sort it there and then (and I don't see how they can), it will be going back for a refund. I'm not letting them take it away. I think it was RickyReno that said he lost his for a couple of days, and it came back no better. The post Goodmans thread is a great idea, as we all know what each other has been experiencing. Sometime the AVForums site gets a bit heavy. I just want to plug in my SKY+, PS2 and DVD, and that's it. I'll be very interested to see the thoughts on the TH42PW7, with regard to the effects we've all seen on this thread. I could stretch to the package mentioned by JoeCool1, but the all-inclusive Viera 42" is probably beyond our budget

Re: [JohnnyBoy] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Well webelectricals delivered my panasonic TH42PW7 saturday, a few days earlier than expected, I ordered 3 scart boards and a pedestal stand with the screen, but they had only sent 2 scart boards and the stand, however they will be couriering the other scart board to me by tuesday, so not to bad as 2 is enough for the time being.

Anyway set up was simple just unsrew plates at back of plasma and screw in scart boards to empty socket, pedestal stand set up is very similar to the goodmans one.

First impressions as plasma came out of box was good, the overall dimensions seem to be smaller than the goodmans and its definately slimmer, lighter and easier to handle. Overall a very neat smart looking display.

The Picture!!!!

Hooked up my sky+ and dvd player and turned screen on. Firstly tried out sky, what can i say an absolutely fantastic picture i scrolled through most of the channels that were causing probs on the goodmans and no evidence of colour banding\painting by numbers effects etc whatsoever, almost indistinguishable picture to the 100hz 32" widescreen Thompson CRT tv i was using before.

Next i tried out sky+ with the recorded programmes that i found to be terrible on the goodmans, the film Virtuosity which was particularly bad was actually very good on the pananasonic, if i looked very hard i could possibly find very small colourbanding effects but it was so small that unless you were watching intently u would never know and all the sports programmes were perfect.

I then put star wars dvd on and skipped to chapter 11 where b4 on the goodmans the 2 sun setting scene which was bad on the goodmans, with loads of colour banding was absolutely perfect on the panny.

During the course of the evening i watched "A league of extraordinary gentleman" on sky which is quite a dark film in places, and it was films like that and "van helsing" etc where i found the goodmans to struggle especially the backgrounds. But again the panasonic was perfect and there was no loss of detail or painting by numbers effects even in the darkest of scenes.

U have 4 default picture settings, Cinema, dynamic, Normal and Auto. I found Normal to be the best for me at the moment but the Auto one looks quite interesting as the screen has a sensor on the front that detects ambient light levels and adjusts the contrast etc accordingly!! very clever.

Anyway if your not happy with the default settings then unlike the goodmans, on the panny you have a whole wealth of extra settings from gamma correction to white balance etc, a load more than i will ever use or know how to use.

Overall for the £1800 it cost me i have found this to be an amazing screen, from taking out from the box and with no picture adjustment the picture was still 10 times better than the goodmans, and im now a very happy viewer.

Hope this helps others in their decision!

Excellent! I'm still deciding between the panny and this (http://www.shootandshow.com/nec-42VR5.htm) NEC. On av forums there is quite a battle between these 2 as to which is the best. I had come down on the NEC side which comes with all the connections as standard and seemed to have excellent adjustments (downloaded the manual). BUT I was waiting to see how you faired as knew you had seen the same effects as myself wrt banding etc. Does the panny allow you to store different picture setting? e.g. DVD may need a different gamma/contrast to SKY+ (or tivo in my case). The NEC does but I;ve read that some screens actually 'remember' which input the setting was applied to...

Re: [joecool1] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

JoeCool1, thanks for the much awaited feedback. You have experienced exactly the same Goodmans issues as I have, and I must admit I was beginning to think that regardless of price, there were always going to be issues with plasmas, especially with recorded SKY+ programs. So, I'm delighted at your initial comments on the PAnny. The 3rd party engineer is coming to have a look at our Goodmans tomorrow, and whilst they'll be able to fix the whistle, I'm sure they'll say there's nothing they can do, when we show them a couple of bits of recorded SKY+ programs, that really show up the problems on ours. So I suspect by tomorrow evening we'll have made the decision to send the P4 back, then I'll have a quick trawl to see where we can get the cheapest TH42PW7, although I assume you had a good search before ordering from webelectricals, and I'm impressed with the delivery time. Hopefully by the time Argos collect the P4, I'll have a replacement. I'll keep everyone informed.

By the way, I'd propbably need same set up as you i.e. 3 scart boards and pedestal stand. Did you just ring for a quote

Cheers

Try posting a message here (http://www.avforums.com/...wthread.php?t=169453) and ask AV Sales for a quote. You'll get a private message with a quote for what you want. I'm 99% certain I'm going for thsi http://www.av-sales.com/...h-42pw7b_plasma.html BUT I'll probably not use the media box and instead buy a terminal block (as suggested in my PM) and a converter from RGB scart to component (a JS Tech box). BAsically I gave AV Sales a list of my items and asked what they would suggest I connect. Initially I will use the media box... but only because I am going to replace my DVD player with one that supports component and progressive scan. If anything my experience with the P4 has meant I;ve read LOTS on getting the best output on a budget now and I think for me it will be to go this way.

I was worried about the connections to the panny as well, but if u know what u want to hook up its easy to order the correct boards and they were very simple to set up.

As for the picture settings, yes you can set up different adjustments for different inputs, for instance my scart 1 is for my DVD player and i have it set up slightly different than my scart 2 which is sky, so every time u change the input the display settings change accordingly.

johnnyboy

yeah i did my research b4 i bought the screen.

The thing is Webelectricals was not the cheapest screen but they supplied a free scart board, so the research i did was for what fitted my requirements, so if u want the same as me (3 scarts and pedestal) then they were not only the cheapest (£1800) but they had the quickest delivery which was important to me.

You could prob get same set up from AV sales (think they quoted £1830??) but their delivery was a couple of weeks or something which was no good to me.

I first looked on their website, then gave them a call to get them to price for my requirements.

To be honest i dont think the engineer has a hope of fixing ur disply either.

Excuse my ignorance, but I notice the spec says Audio output is 16W (8W x 2). I'm assuming this means it doesn't have built in speakers, but with bog standard audio cables you can feed a couple of average speakers.

no u dont get speakers with it, i use an optical lead from skybox\dvd player straight to amp so i dont need them, however there are standard connections either side of unit to attach speakers to. They also supply some ferrite core block thingys (i think these are to prevent interference! correct me if im wrong?) to attach to your speaker cable.

Re: [joecool1] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

Well ordered the panny from av sales with the media box (as per previous link). I'm going to try it like that first, if we're happy with the picture quality I'll leave it at that, otherwise I'll probably buy a component/s-video terminal board and DVI board. Bought it with 2 years extended warranty (i.e. 3 years in all). So for screen+wall mount+mediabox+warranty I saw change out of £1700, BUT they are running out (I see no reason not to belive them) I ordered mine now as I'm back to the states next week again for a while so didn;t want to have to start thinking from scratch again. (I wanted to try the medi box). For anyone interested there is supposed to be a progressive scan/component out dvd player available at sainsburies which (once someone else has tried it ;-) ) I may invest in as prog scan is supposed to make quite a difference to the display on a plasma (i.e. it's designed for panels NOT crt) - see here http://www.thedvdforums.com/...amp;page=1&pp=20 (you may need to be a member of the forums to see the link)

Re: [andymac] GOODMANS GTV42P3 42 " PLASMA TV [In reply to] Can't Post

3rd party engineer came today to look at our P4. First he said that the whistling was quieter than a lot of plasmas, but it is a trait, that you should expect, and if you get a silent one, you're very lucky. Mmmm. Then he was shown SKY+ recordings of some footy, and Emmerdale, to see the worst of the 'painting by numbers' effect, and he just said that you'd get that on all plasmas to a greater or lesser extent. I wonder if he's ever seen a plasma before. Anyway, the upshot is I'm calling Argos tomorrow to come and take it away for good. Feel a bit sorry for Argos, they've been great with us since day one. They must have lost quite a bit on these Goodmans. The guy who collected the first one said they've had shed loads of returns.

So, onwards with the replacement. Must admit, I'm now very tempted with the AVSales option, to include media box/ terminal board / stand/ + extra two years warranty, for £1732.90. Having an extra box doesn't bother me, and as I have one of the coax outputs from my SKY+ box, to a signal amplifier in the garage which then splits off to other rooms, it would (I hope) mean that I could flick to just watching terrestrial TV on the panel if SKY is being watched elsewhere. I'm also assuming that I can plug my 3 scarted sources (SKY+, DVD and PS2), into the 3 scarts on the Media box, and switching is simple via the supplied remote. This way, there's only the one cable up to the panel, which should be neater. Any info from those that have gone this route would be much appreciated. Just gone on the AVSales site (11.30 p.m.) and it says they've got 40 coming in on the 28th, but only 15 remain, so do I make a quick decision, or do a bit more research. Surely, once these have gone more will come in soon. Problem is when the Goodmans goes back, I'll have to bring a spare 25" 4:3 CRT from upstairs in the short term, as the 32" that the goodmans replaced is suffering a bit. Decisions, decisions.........

Just a suggestion, try posting here - http://www.avforums.com/...wthread.php?t=169453 and ask Alistair for a quote (if you haven't already then get a login on avforums). For what you listed. If they have some left you may get a better price ;-)

Well, I've done it, ordered the 42" Panasonic mediabox package from AVSales, with stand and extended warranty. I now need to sort out the sound setup. I don't need anything too fancy, but I guess I need an amp and speakers that can take digital input from my SKY+ box, the dolby 5.1 leads from my DVD player, and the 2 audio cables from the mediabox. I guess my budget is around 300, which is not a fortune, but as I've just shelled out 1700, my max total is about 2k. Anybody got any tips.

Thanks

John

Wow. Our panasonic arrived today. Set it up this evening and it's fantastic. Better than any of the pictures we saw in high street stores. To those of you with your Goodmans - I hope you had a better experience than we did.

Thanks for eveyone's input, I guess this is me out of this thread now.

Excellent news. Mines coming next Thursday. So you've founf routing throught the mediabox ok I takr it. The teccies on AVForums have been slating it a bit. So as it was 'free' I thought I'd try it for a while before thinking about JS-Converters, etc. When mine comes I will probably put a few updates on your POSt Goodmans thread, just to let other novices like myself know my opinions. Sometimes I think a lot of those on AVForums are the Home cinema buffs who spend thousands on amps speakers, etc. I just wanted a TV that looks good and sounds decent. Once again glad you're so pleased, makes me even more excited as I ordered the same package. Just a quick question. Is the unit quiet enough? I've heard some say that all plasmas make some noise. My first Goodmans didn't (that was it's only redeemin feature)

Cheers

JohnnyBoy - yes, I thought the same as you. Try the media box and if its good enuf that fine, if not then move onto the extra terminal blocks. Well for us it was night and day between this and the goodmans, and for us it's fine thru the media box... TiVo + DVD thru RGB scart, Windows Media Box thru S-Video (via Scart) all fine. I'm thinking of getting a component out DVD player with Progressive Scan (supposed to be one for £30 + in Sainsburys but none near us) but thats all I'm going to do for our system. And it's silent - well at leats to my post 35 year old ears anyhow!

Hi Pete,

Glad you're sorted, I still think the Goodmans is value for money once working correctly. My Goodmans/Argos history is:

Bought 3, one for me, one each for my kids(big kids!). All three were P3's, all made humming sound. All collected and replaced by Argos, P3's again, all humming as before. Phoned Argos, complained about being messed around with deliveries, got £25 cheque. All three replacement P3's collected and replaced with P4's-a world of difference, really pleased, much nicer design etc, two perfect, one making a whistling noise. Phoned Argos, they are replacing with a new one on Thursday. So at the end of the saga, providing the replacement is OK I have had ten tv's before they all worked ok. I'm still delighted with the tv's, I don't really bother about the tiny bit of 'painting by numbers' effect, it is so minimal. My advice is to keep requesting replacements until you get a good one, also Argos tell me that the guarantee runs from the date on the delivery note, so although I bought them in Dec 04 the guarantee now runs from March 05!

Regards,

Tony.

Pete, Tony. Glad your both sorted. I wish I'd been happy with my P4. (Should have been collected by the time I get home). At 1000, if you're both happy, it's fantastic value, considering what I've now paid for the Panasonic screen hopefully being delivered tomorrow. The big worry for me with keep swapping was the fear that my SKY+ would never look good. DVD (higher quality) was pretty damn good on my Goodmans, but SKY overall was poor in comparison. Of course there's no guarantees the picture will be spot on with the Panny, I can only keep my fingers crossed that I have the same results as others who have had the same problems I had, who have now changed to the Panny, and said WOW!!. I'll keep everyone posted as there are many more who have read this thread than have contributed, so hopefully it might help some of the 'undecided'

Cheers

Just a quick update. My Panny arrived on Thursday. Well, I,m glad to say I no longer have the 'painting by numbers effect'. I only wish the Goodmans had given me a picture like the one I have now. DVD is unbelievable, PS2 is great. The only problems with SKY+ are down to SKY+ itself, the piccie I get now is better than I was getting on my CRT. Let's hope SKY go to HDTV sooner rather than later. Still, it's all come at a premium. As it came without speakers, I invested in a yamaha sxl80 amp and surround speakers. So my original £1000 inestment is now £1700, so once again, well done to any Goodmans buyers thayt have been happy with their PQ.
