Gray borders on left and right when watching regular cable?? Why??

I just bought the Zenith (LG) Plasma Z50PX2D 50"..............When I watch regular cable there are gray vertical borders on both sides of the screen. Is this normal? Is there a way to make them black so they are not noticable when watching cable?
I am new to Plasma and would love some help!!!!!
