How to Remove the Dell Inspiron 1501 Keyboard Latch 0506

Because the [url=http://www.laptopkeyboardsale.com/dell-inspiron-1501-keyboard-p-131_m-8338.html]Dell Inspiron 1501 Keyboard latch is hardwired to the motherboard, in order to remove the keyboard latch, you must remove the entire motherboard. The keyboard latch keeps the cable running from the keyboard to the motherboard connected to the motherboard so it will function properly. Removing this latch by itself (if it were possible) could result in the cable becoming disconnected while the laptop is in use.

Turn the laptop over with the bottom facing up and the hinges facing you, then remove the battery located at the top right section of the laptop by pushing the battery latch located below the battery to the left. Pushing the battery latch will cause the battery to pop up out of the battery slot, at which point you can lift and pull the battery out of the slot.

Remove the hard drive. Remove the two screws (not the ones in the deep holes) along the right side of the laptop just below where the battery was, then grip the notch on the hard drive located between the two screws and pull the hard drive to the right to remove it.

Remove the optical driver by removing the screw located just below the lower left corner of where the battery was. Use a screwdriver to push the notch located under the screw you just removed to the left, which will cause the optical drive to jut out from the side of the computer. Grip the drive and pull it to the left to remove it.

Remove the plastic cover located below where the battery was (there is only one plastic cover on the bottom of the laptop). Remove the two screws, then lift up the plastic cover.

Remove the memory module(s) by pushing the metal clips on either side of each memory module apart from each other at the same time. This will cause the memory module to pop-up at an angle. Pull the module away from the slot to remove it.

Remove the modem located in the bottom section of the same space as the memory module (under the plastic cover). Remove the single screw in the bottom right corner of the space and disconnect the modem by pulling the cable away from the left side of the rectangular modem. Lift the modem out of the space to remove it.

Remove the remaining 15 screws from the bottom of the laptop. There are four along the top edge, four along the bottom edge, two on either side of the two screws you removed for the hard drive, one to the right of the battery latch, one to the left of the plastic cover you removed for the memory module, and one about 2" to the left of that screw.

Remove the two screws (one on either end) from the back of the laptop. The back of the laptop is the side with the hinge. Also, remove the two hex screws on either side of the blue, trapezoidal VGA connector using the hex screwdriver.

Open the display as wide as it will go, then insert a flat head screwdriver between the right side of the hinge cover and the laptop to pry the hinge cover away. Pull the hinge cover from the right to the left to remove it. The hinge cover is the plastic piece with the power button on it. It is located above the [url=http://www.any-battery.com/replacement-for-dell-inspiron-1501-laptop-keyboard-p-21074.html]Dell Inspiron 1501 Keyboard.

Remove the keyboard by unscrewing it above the "F4" and "Pause" keys, then lifting it up slightly. Lift up on the keyboard latch located under where the spacebar was, then slide the keyboard cable out of the connector. Lift up the keyboard to remove it.

Remove the mini-pci card located in the upper right side of the laptop below the right hinge. Pull up on the gold connectors for the black and white cables to disconnect them. Pull up on the card and remove it from the laptop.

Remove the display. Unscrew the single screw on each hinge. Pull up on the pull tab located at the top of the laptop in the space to the left of where the mini-pci card was. Lift up the display to remove it.

Remove the palm rest. Pull up on the touchpad connector to disconnect it. The touchpad connector is located to the right of the [url=http://www.any-battery.com/replacement-for-dell-inspiron-1501-laptop-keyboard-p-21074.html]Dell Inspiron 1501 Keyboard connector. Pull up on the standby switch connector located next to the upper right corner of where the mini-pci card used to be. Unscrew the single screw at the top center of the laptop. Lift up the palm rest and use your fingers to separate it from the bottom of the laptop.

Remove the fan. The fan is in the upper left hand corner of the laptop. There is one screw in the upper left corner and one in the bottom right corner that need to be removed. Disconnect the cable to the right of the bottom right screw on the fan by pulling up on the connector. Lift the fan up to remove it from the laptop.

Remove the thermal cooling assembly and processor. Unscrew the four screws on the square cooling assembly with the copper pipe going through it. The screws are labeled 1-4. Unscrew them in numerical order, then lift up on the cooling assembly to remove it. Using a flat head screw, turn the screw below the processor located under the cooling assembly you just removed. Turn the screw counterclockwise until it stops. Lift up the processor to remove it.

Remove the ExpressCard slot. The ExpressCard is located on the middle right side of the laptop. Unscrew the three screws along the top of the slot, the two on the left side, and one on the bottom right corner of the slot. Lift out the ExpressCard slot to remove it.

Remove the motherboard. Remove the single screw in the top left corner of the green motherboard and the single screw in the bottom left corner. Lift the motherboard out of the bottom casing of the laptop to remove it.

Tips & Warnings

Unless otherwise noted, all screws require the Phillips head screwdriver.

Touch a piece of metal before touching inside components to prevent damage from static shock. Also, opening the laptop may void the manufacturer's warranty.
