Does anyone know the flashing code for this set. set goes into protection then I get 8 flashes, unplugging makes no difference.

In this situation, I would recommend you to take help of professionals or from the manufacturers customer care, if the TV is still in warranty period.

If you do a search for any of the following models of Philips plasma sets, the error code is the same.

42PF5320

42PF7521

Plus the 50" versions.

Google will help you. However it is usually the Power Supply to be honest.
