Plasma picture pixelation Can't Post

I have a Philips 42" plasma model 42pf9953 which I am generally pleased with but from time to time I get annoyed by the pixel definition when showing human faces or muscle definition, especially when the face is up close to the camera. It is more evident in PAL picture compared to NTSC. The face or muscle definition seems to drop in resolution for that split second while the TV is catching up in displaying the image. The human face appears to have a silvery lining. Why is this only happening to just human flesh? Have I set up the TV incorrectly? I am using a Thomson HD set top box.

What you're seeing sounds like digital compression artefacts. Satellite TV is heavily compressed with the 'blockiness' you describe very obvious on areas with subtle shading and/or sharp edges. DVDs are alos compressed (but not usually as much as satellite) so the problem should be less obvious.

PAL is higher definition than NTSC: that's why the problem is more noticeable.

I have the same problem with the Samsung SP-P4231. I got a DVD player with DVI and I still get the pixelation. The quality of my previous flat screen TV was better. Does anyone knows what to do to get the crisp image you see in the showrooms, which makes you get the TV.?

Hi, I have exactly the same issue on a Philips. I have tried to contact philips, but this was a waste of time. I contacted Dixons (where I bought it) who sent an engineer out - another waste of time. All I seem to be getting told is that it is an inherent problem with Plasmas especialy with SKY (something about sky being on 60hz/70hz and this being a 100hz tv????). I'm a bit p'd off about it as I cannot recall seeing the same thing happening when I have watched Plasmas before with SKY e.g. in pubs watching football. Anyone else anymore comments on this???

Thanks, Neil.

I think this is the phenomenon known as 'clayface' or 'clownface' where the many skin tones degrade into pools of just one color in a given area. I keep seeing it on many brands of LCD and Plasma TV's. I've read some advice that input cable quality can make a difference and cranking up the brightness reduces it somewhat. I'd sure like to know how the experts get rid of it. For me it's only visible or obvious when the actors are in a darkly lit scene.

Hi Guys

After reading the fairly good views on the LG RZ42PX11, I decided to go out and buy one, I managed to get it for £1499 form Comet on an interest free over 2 years. What I'm asking is "What do I need now to get the best out of this screen i.e scart leads ect?"

Your advice will be greatly received.

Frown I have a Samsung Plasma model SPN4235 and I have the same problem you called 'clayface' or 'clownface'. I dont beleive after I spent almost 3,000 fot this unit I can't get a good picture. I always thought this problem was caused by a poor cable tv signal. Also have the problem on few DVD movies. Called Samsung and the Tech said this is normal on Plasma TV's. PLEASE, Somebody tell me if changing to Sat TV could minimize this problem and if you can recommend a DVD player to prevent this issue. THANKS.....

you said! "Also have the problem on few DVD movies".....of course! old movies transferred to DVD's doesn't always mean: You expect HD resolution back then!......clownfaces from some movies caused by original takes from ANALOG recording even before they were transferred to DVD's... The reality is: your display can only deliver true high definition only when you are feeding it with FULL HD materials which is currently WE'RE still in the process of producing future HD programs.

Pirate My friend. I finally could watch HD on my Plasma and unfortunately for me the TV works fine just with Sports events but with movies and documentaries still has a lot of problems. If you read this, think twice before purshase Samsung. Samsung you got me this time "ONLY" this time.

Sorry about the spelling.

You cant get rid of the pixal shading or ghosting thay call it it is luck of the draw on how bad it is

1st when thay make the screens it is a giant sheet of glass if you get a pice from the middle it is better quality.

2nd when you go to a shop and watch the screens thay are playing a vary high quailty dvd if you take one of your own dvds in or ask them to run sky through the plasma you will see the differance in the quailty.

I have a goodmans xpro GTV 42 P5 it was my 2nd one (1st went strate back) and it is much better.

Tony
