I'm curious about where LED TVs stand in the mix? LED TVs seems to be really pricey right now. They are extremely thin, which is nice but what other features do they have compared to LCDs and Plasmas?

I am sure that if the image truly fades away there are techniques of replacing the gas.

I actually have read that plasmas (and lcd screens) last up to around 60,000 hours!
Is there any verified stats on this?

Mostly "laboratory conditions."

60,000/24/365= 6.8 years of continuous use. Virtually NOBODY uses a computer monitor like that.

Here (in 2010) I'm replacing CCFL bulbs in 2004 through 2006 monitors.

Plasma used to be better (brighter and faster) than LCD but the new LCDs have caught up. They also have the advantage of being more reliable and less costly to repair than a plasma.

Re: [Tom1222] Plasma vs LCD [In reply to] Can't Post

LCD panels have definitely improved since I purchased my Panasonic plasma three years ago.
The biggest problem I have with them is the pixel response time. For the majority of viewing, it's not a problem, but for extreme motion scenes with maximum changes in contrast, I still see ghosting on the large LCD screens. It's not too bad on displays smaller than 50 inches.

It's a question of taste, isn't it? I like the plasma ones more. Can't determine why actually, the image of both kinds doesn't very much (especially in the expensive products).

Assuming your friend does have a point because Plasma TVs need a fan to ‘cool’ plasma TV screen that is not too hot when used in a long time. Therefore do not use the combustion process, the LCD screen has a longer life than plasma screens.
I think both have advantages and disadvantages of each. So it depends on taste of each, whether to buy a plasma TV or LCD TV... :)

This review says it all "The best TV we've ever tested" http://www.squidoo.com/TC-P60ZT60-review You can't beat a Plasma for black levels and it's even better now in light rooms. Beats an lcd hands down. I've always had an lcd but changed to Plasma on the basis of this and it's the best move I ever made.

Re: [Church] Plasma vs LCD [In reply to] Can't Post

It's not what's occurring behind the display that's important — it's how the display works as a tv that issues the most. In that respect, both plasma and LCD TV places generate outstanding images, and the variations between them aren't as noticeable as they used to be. While the newest plasma televisions are particularly good, LCD places are easily capturing up with regards to top quality, with developments like LED back illumination.
