Problem with 5.1 audio w/ Digital Cable Box, HDMI, Optical Can't Post

From some reason I am not getting 5.1 audio when I run the optical cable from my Samsung HPS4253 Plasma to my A/V Receiver. I currently have a Motorola 6412 Cable Box with a HDMI cable running to the TV. Does anyone know why I can’t get 5.1 audio when I have it hooked up like this. If I run the optical cable between the cable box and the A/V receiver the 5.1 works.

I had the same problem with my SONY. Apparently the TV doesn't strip out the audio from the HDMI signal - therefore it can't pass it on to the receiver. So I ran my digital audio cable directly from the cable box to my receiver. Whenever the TV is on the receiver is on...I never listen to audio through the TV.

Your Plasma audio output is set to L and R channel, stereo mode. It does decode surround sound effect into 2 channels only but not independent towards your receiver and to your 5.1 speakers. Simply you had a wrong connections. Cable box to AV Receiver yesssssss!!!
