Question on Size of Image Can't Post

This is probably a fairly basic question

But when I put a DVD into this Sharp Plasma TV that my friend owns, it's widescreen, but it doesn't extend across the entire screen. So I have to either do "zoom" "stretch" or one of the other view modes to get a full screen image.

I am somewhat confused by this. Also I notice that while the image is really close it's just not as sharp as it is in the original zoom mode.

Is this true with all 16x9 plasma tvs or is it the fault of the DVD (keep in mind it's widescreen which I thought would mean it would fit these new rectangular TVs...

I'm confused.

Re: [HeadWest] Question on Size of Image [In reply to] Can't Post

It is the fault of the different aspect ratios used for movies.

There are different aspect ratios for movies. A movie or HD program with 1.77:1 aspect ratio fills the whole screen of any widescreen tv.
The other Aspect ratios fill the screen across but there are black boxes on top and below the movie. That is just because of the aspect ratio the director choose to make the movie with.

Here is link with some information and different pictures of aspect ratios
