Famous Samsung Clicking Issue Can't Post

My Samsung PN58A55081FXZA has been dealing with this "clicking" issue for many months now. To get it to finally turn on, I have to wait a few hours (sometimes more than 8 hours) or get my handy hair dryer and it will power up in 5 minutes. If I leave the TV on 24/7 I have no problems but, if someone turns it off, I have to blow dry it to get it on again.

I've seen lots of posts on this in this forum but I don't see any definite solution. I followed the TAMPATEC YouTube video to look for bad caps but there are none. There is one video out there (https://www.youtube.com/...oQ2UNy8i-Ec&t=7s) where the guy spends 7 minutes talking about bad solders and cleaning gunk only to get to the end where nothing worked with some text saying, I fixed it another way.

So, my main question is how do I troubleshoot this but, I am dying to know why the hair dryer works and whether or not that is a helpful clue to pinpoint the issue.

Thanks!

The troubleshooting procedures are messed up. My VS and VA readings (202/65) exactly match the sticker but there is no "next step". It just says "Did the problem improve?".

BTW: I am still wondering why the hair dryer allows the TV to turn on so quickly. What is the thing that needs to heat up?

Bad solder joints - ball grid array IC joints, etc.

Ahah, thanks ... so my problem is probably bad caps that don't look bad.

This leaves me with a few questions moving forward.

First, is it possible to isolate the board the bad cap might be on? For example, the problem still happens when all boards are disconnected ... does that mean the bad cap is probably on the SMPS?

Second, once I've isolated the board, is it possible to identify a bad cap using a multi-meter?

Yes, I have that from the docs you sent me before. Still, how does that apply here? I have power.

I was troubleshooting using the "When the unit is repeatedly turning on and off" page after that. That is my issue and that page is constructed poorly. It says "do the voltages match" and, if the answer is yes, the next step is "Did problem improve?".

Again, how do I tell which board has the bad caps?

Is VA & VS BOTH as specified on label?
If NO - replace the power supply.
If YES - replace the Main Board.
If replacing the Main cures, you're done, If it doesn't cure, replace the Y Main.
If cures, you're done, If not cured, continue, etc.
Basically it's giving you the order in which to replace the boards.

I usually remove the capacitors and test them out of circuit. Value and ESR are most important.

Re: [jts1957] Famous Samsung Clicking Issue [In reply to] Can't Post

So, since the voltages do match, the number one suspect becomes the MAIN board.

I also noticed when searching for replacements to the MAIN board that a lot of people (including Amazon) are selling MAIN board repair kits.

https://www.amazon.com/...S1FXZA/dp/B012GW9Q7M

According to the shopjimmy installation video for this kit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC4f2Ik8rCI), the large chip replacement is to cure issues with no audio. However those two smaller items are specific to the "clicking on and off" issue.

So, I focused my handy hair dryer on that specific area and ... voila ... the TV fired up in less than a minute!

Looking more closely at the area surrounding that specific area I noticed two black structures which appear to be melted and the structure closest to the edge is directly over that specific area. Here is a pic showing what they should look like on the left and what mine looks like on the right.

https://drive.google.com/...dt72STnZOT1JKWU5pTUU

My guess is that replacing those structures (and not the two small components under them) would solve everything. However, at this point, ordering a new board for $95 from eBay is probably the most efficient solution as any $20 repair kit would also warrant purchasing the tools (soldering iron, wick, heat gun, etc...) as well.

So, to anyone out there, I hope this thread sheds some light on another potential solution. If you don't hear back from me, that means ordering a new MAIN board was the solution!

p.s. what are those two black structures in my before/after pic?

So, after replacing the MAIN, the problem still persists. Applying heat from a blow dryer to the upper-left corner of both the old MAIN and this new MAIN causes the TV to power on perfectly. Without the blow dryer, the TV clicks on and off for hours.
