Samsung Firmware Update-Please Help!

Hello all,
I have a 50" Samsung plasma. Awhile back it started to get a red spot in the middle of the screen, only visible on dark images. It slowly grew to where it is now, covering most of the screen and glittering bright red on whiter images. I called Samsung and they told me it needs a firmware update, however my menu doesn't contain the option for that. I tried putting the update on a thumb drive and into the USB port, but the tv only recognizes media files from there. Please help.
