I have the same problem with the same model. It started a week ago...maybe it's post-election phenomenon. Does anyone know what the problem is? How to fix it?

Re: [Sony] Sony PFM42B1 [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

My Sony PFM-42B1 Plasma has just shut down. The green light went off the the red light started blinking on and off. The TV seems to be trying to turn on every few seconds as I hear the fans kick in, but then kick off again with the red light blinking all along. If I wait an hour or so the TV will turn on again as normal but then shut down after about a minute. Would anyone had an idea as to what the problem is? Sounds like it could be the power supply.

Thank you for any information,
cpc

Re: [Tomek] Sony PFM42B1 [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi

Normally a 5-blink on RED LED means cooling Fan_Failure .. I'm not sure whether this is the case with Sony or not .. But, you guys might wonna try to monitor the fan during this process .. Perhaps set a timer or clock and find out how long will it take for the unit to shut down and report to this forum. If the elapsed time is very near among you all, then it's obvious that it's a common manufacturing-related fault !!

You can also have a fan blower right before the expected (shuting down) time and start blowing air into the unit and see if the unit still shuts down or not .. 8 )) It might sounds funny but this is what I do when there is an issue with temp and power control !! and I can easily troubleshoo the fault.

There are some temp. sensors and the power control circuit has a very complicated feedback system .. This is to protect the TV from getting hot and possibly damaging the boards .. I guess any overheat can shut down the system from the power control board. The main micro-controller detects the heat and sends messages to the power supply when the heat has gone up !

I hope this will help .. regards ..

Re: [baher] Sony PFM42B1 [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the input. On my TV if I leave the tv unplugged for an extended period of time the TV will come up with screen lit for about 30-45 seconds then shut down, restart, shut down restart. If the tv has not been unplugged and you push the green button the sequence of starting and stopping starts immediately.

Once the tv starts cycling on and off the red light flashed 4 slow flashes then the tv tries to power up, screen flashes then starts a lot of fast flashes and the screen will flash every few seconds like it is trying to power up. when it stops trying to power up the red light does a sequence of 6 quick flashes over and over.

Re: [gadams] Sony PFM42B1 [In reply to] Can't Post

I would like to add my story to the list.
My 42B1 did much the same in October.
I live in Sydney Australia and had done a bit of reading on the problem. Found it was a fairly? common problem with the 42B1. Unit was 2 years old hence 1 year out of warranty.

Sony would not/could not repair unit - offered new 42X1 for $1500. After lots of discussion settled on $1000 changeover.
Sony were I guess OK in their response to the problem - spoke to a number of customer support people - some were friendly others were hostile and quite rude.

Depends where you live - there may be other possibilities thru consumer protection laws etc eg lemon laws, implied warranty etc - depends if you have the time and patience. I have heard of another example where owner got a free replacement - not sure what warranty he had.

Would always have bought Sony - maybe not now??

Do your homework and be prepared.... 42X1 is a nice unit - has had good reviews.

Good luck

Chris

Did you (or anyone else for that matter) find what the problem is? I have the same problem with 6 blinks of the red LED.

Thanks,

Re: [gadams] Sony PFM42B1 [In reply to] Can't Post

Greg,

Have you ot anyone else here had this problem repaired?

I've got a problem that sounds just like yours. My PFM-42B1 is just over 3 years old and just today stopped working. I have the same power symptoms, where the unit tries to startup and fails in repeated cycles of ~7 second intervals, 3 to 4 times before totally failing to start.

Does anyone know of an tech repair shop in the San Francisco Bay area that can repair this plasma screen?

Thanks for any and all replies.

Steve,

The short answer is no, I could not find any help or a resolution but did find many people with the same problem. I did narrow it down to one of two boards but had an unfortunate accident and broke the plasma. I will part out the pieces if anyone is interested?

Re: [gadams] Sony PFM42B1 [In reply to] Can't Post

I have a PCB fail in mine I would be interested in the PCB BOARDS

INFO I Have Found:

STBY LED flashes

2 times pcb X SUS TEMP (DD CON

3 times pcb Y SUS TEMP (I/O Block)

4 times Center TEMP

5 times Digital 5 volts

6 times PANEL FAIL (PDP)

1) The power must be supplied normally to the PDP unit. This power is supplied through two black 8-pin connectors from the power unit. The kinds of power supply are 160 V line, 60 V line, and 5 V line.

2) As input signals, H.SYNC (negative polarity), V.SYNC (negative polarity), BLANKING (negative polarity),CLOCK and RGB digital data (8 bit x 3) must be entered normally and DISPEN must be “high”. If no images appears through the above conditions are satisfied, the PDP unit will be defective.

Re: [Tomek] Sony PFM42B1 [In reply to] Can't Post

Sigh, it appears I must join the growing list of you with 42B1s who have the "fails to start / blinking LED" problem. This, I assume, is the result of some failure of the system as detected by the Power On Self Test logic.

Mine is intermittent, and may be related to temperature (i.e., it seems less likely to come on if the system's warm). Sometimes it works, and sometimes it won't come up, apparently rebooting and trying again several times, as evidenced by the LED going briefly to green, fans starting, and short light burst from the display. Once or twice it even shut off after running fine for quite a long time. It seems to be getting worse. Frown

At least once it showed a pattern of 6 red LED blinks, and from what I gather above this implies "PANEL FAIL (PDP)", whatever that means. Seems unlikely it's a hard failure of the display, because when it works it looks great.

I haven't purchased a service manual yet. I'm decent at fixing high tech stuff. My question is this: Is the service manual going to be enough to facilitate this, or does one need Sony training (in other words, should I even try or should I just give up and throw money at the repair center)?

Thanks for any wisdom you can offer.

-Noel

Re: [NoelCarboni] Sony PFM42B1 [In reply to] Can't Post

I have the same problem (no picture and standby LED blinking 6 times).

At first I thought it was a power supply problem as many people did and it would be fairly easy to fix. But actually, it's not.

After I paid $70 for a diagnostic fee at the Sony Authorized Service Center, they told me the cost to fix it would be $2,925.00. That costs more than buying a new one on the internet. So, it's not worthy to pay that much to fix for my old plasma.

The problem is that they would replace X and Y sync boards to fix it rather than troubleshoot down to component level.

Now I'm looking for broken plasma to buy parts. And, I hope that I can fix it by myself.

Re: [jpt54] Sony PFM42B1 [In reply to] Can't Post

Jpt54, did you talk to the folks at the Sony San Diego repair facility?

I ask, because the local Sony shop near me - one with a "platinum" rating as I recall - told me the same thing. When I called Sony corporate support, they told me no one but the San Diego facility has "THE test fixture" for this model and could make that judgment for sure.

They also told me there's a design issue with these monitors that they're fixing under an extended warranty arrangement. But you have to send the monitor to them - in San Diego - to be sure. They called this the "HIC Issue", and it indeed involves the X and Y boards.

I recommend you call these numbers and find out whether your set might have the "HIC Issue" that they described to me:

Sony Business and Professional Solutions
866-766-9272

Also

Sony Broadcast Solutions Services
877-350-3477

I've ordered a shipping container from them and my PFM42B1 is going on a vacation to the San Diego rejuvenation facility! :)

Could you please wait for awhile until I called Sony at San Diego to know if my monitor has been covered for "HIC issue" or not ?

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Thanks,
