Vertical Lines on AKAI PDP4294 Can't Post

I've got an AKAI PDP4294 that has about an inch of yellow vertical scanlines that wont go away and yes they stay in the same place on the screen when I change aspect ratios. I'm pretty sure its the PDP panel and that the set is as good as garbage because of that but just wanted to make sure.

and..
Is it just me or are plasma tvs just trash as far as longevity is concerned? It seems that so many of them develop "fatal" problems by the time they are 2 years old!

More than likely it's the panel and yes, the unit is toast.

Plasma technology is still relatively new compared to say LCD or CRT based technology. You've just experienced one of it's downfalls.

Similar problem with my LG Plasma only it was one vertical black line in the centre of the display. A call to my local (and unusually helpful) TV repairer suggested either a crook display or a faulty connection or dry joint or fault pcb. The budgetary price of around $1400 to replace the plasma display when a brand newee of the same type and size costing about $200 more made me wish I had bought an extended warranty.

Anyway, I removed the back panel and signal processing circuitry to expose the address line connectors to the plasma display. I removed the flexible printed wiring flat cable located in the middle of the bottom edge of the display from the connector on the relevant pcb, refitted it and, touch wood, its working again. Of interest is the fact that I was unfamiliar with the connector type and damaged it a bit when trying to open it but not sufficient it would seem to make the connector faulty. Usually with connectors you pull but with this one you "lift the lid" so to speak to release the pressure holding the printed wiring against the connector pins.

Two important points:
1. many faults may simply be caused by bad connections, and
2. with something as expensive as a Plasma TV extended warranty is highly recommended

I'd also a good idea to avoid buying brands like Akai in the first place. My company does Akai warranty work and all I can say is the support from the distributor of that line (there is no real company called Akai, it's merely a badged name) is pathetic to say the least. <br>

MOtvGuy,
You're quite right. I don't even know if the Akai brand is used here in Australia on plasma TVs. I remember years ago making a mental note not ever to buy Akai after looking at a relos VCR.

The black, centrally located vertical bar on my LG RT-42PX10 did reappear briefly today so I guess the problem is only marginally fixed. One thing I have to consider is whether or not to pursue replacement of the SMD printed cable connector I damaged.

The RT-42PX10 seems to me to be fairly labour intensive to work on. About 50 or so screws to remove, many of them driving into plastic (so care required when refastening), then cables to unplug, a signal processing tray to remove, then more framework, to get at the plasma address connectors.
