Whats the best?? Can't Post

Hello, I am trying to determine the best 42 inch HD ready plasma on the market. I thought I had come to the conclusion that the Panasonic Th-42PX20U/P was the best through articles. Then I read consumer reports and it lists the Hitachi 42HDT50 as number one and the Sony KE-42TS2 as number two and the panasonic as number 3. Anyone have any feedback as to which is really the best and why?...

Panasonic is IDEAS FOR LIFE! It is the world's most beautiful picture in Plasmavision. Fujitsu was the LEADER! PANASONIC perfected it!. No other else! FUJITSU, JVC, are now using PANASONIC glass in their current panels. BANG & OLUFSEN also re-framed the HDTV series of Panasonic displays claiming their own but all electronics inside are OWNED and designed only by PANASONIC.

Panasonic does make a good plasma, especially the black levels... but if you are going to start talking about the "best plasmas" in the industry then you had better start mentioning Runco and Vidikron. Check out the NEC models too. They make the glass for Toshiba, Marantz, and Sonys XBR line of plasmas. Do you have a plasma yet ? I am either going to get an NEC 42xr3 or 50xr4 within a month. I had it narrowed down to a Panny, a Pioneer or an NEC. My buddy has a new NEC and I saw a football game on it and was blown away... I had never seen such beautiful color saturation on a plasma. Panny... NEC... how can you really go wrong ?Wink

COSTA22 > to each his own really! By far I have done my research thoroughly (before I went PANASONIC). RUNCO, VIDIKRON and REVOX are Just a HIGH-END name which in the end, specifications, side by side comparison would be a best way to judge with their hand-held remote control in your palm in order to calibrate them all.

I have seen enough before I made my decision, RUNCO still an EDTV type of display with only 853 x 480 lines of resolution as well as VIDIKRON with staggering high-end price. I used to have an eye on NEC, PIONEER, SONY and JVC but glad I had waited a bit.......When you look at them in the showroom, there ain't that much difference to notice to one another.

I like them all really as you mentioned but the reason I settled on PANASONIC, was watching and observing the previous owners. Thanks from EBAY!......I have read so many owners selling theirs through EBAY bec. of burned-in issues. PIONEER, NEC, MITSUBISHI, SONY, FUJITSU ( The leader) were the companies to prove their failure as far a burn-in issue is concern.

Check this out though! Not ONE Panasonic owner has ever complaint about burn-in YET!. NOT ONE!. not even from their FIRST model. Panasonic introduces the very first model to possess the highest contrast ratio in the world when I expected SONY to topped that but... NEVER! And now, I beleived, Any manufacturer that has same CONTRAST RATIO to PANASONIC displays is simply bec. they are now using PANASONIC GLASS. FUJITSU does now using PANASONIC glass in their current model.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at the 50 inch Panny for a bit but in the end I want a great picture and the cabinet "look" matters to me too. This is not as important as picture quality of course but I like how the plasmas with the thin "picture frame" looks......look. Def. just me being nitpicky though. Do you have a plasma?... If so, which one? The only real drawback to the NEC for me was that it only has 1 digital input but I am going to get a DVI converter box that has 4 DVI inputs on it so that fixes that. I also like that the NEC that I am looking at comes with a 3 yr. warranty from the manufacturer... 1 yr. on the pic. and 3 years on parts and labor. NEC "from what I have read" also have "somehow" a tighter looking pixel structure than a lot of other plasmas. I don't know exactly how this is achieved but a couple of reviewers have mentioned it. If you do have your plasma already... what size is it and what is your approximate veiwing distance? Again, thanks for the info.Wink

I was looking at the 42 inch Panny too, but people have been pointing me to Sony Wega Projection or the Sammy 4663 DLP. I have read great things about the Panny, but keep hearing possibility of burn-in or the picture changing due to the gas leakage over time. Are these serious problems??
Thanks. Will be buying something this weekend.

If you get the Sony Projection unit you will end up having to have a service tech. come out once a year to adjust the guns if you want the t.v. to keep looking it's best... (the guns will drift a little throughout the year and effect the picture quality in a neg. way), screen burn can be an issue with this set but if your careful it won't happen. The Samsung 4663 dlp is a good t.v. but I can't get past the "screen door" effect... (let me know if you need to know what that means). Dlp's are good sets though because there is no maintenance... One day the bulb just wears out and you replace it... no big deal. No burn in issues at all with dlp's either. Last but not least the Panasonic plasma. If picture quality is your primary concern then this is your set. Panasonics plasmas have a half life of 60,000 hours... so no worries there. As far as "burn in" is concerned, you almost have to be looking to accomplish this on the newer plasma sets to get it to happen. All of the new sets have "pixel orbitization" and "white flush" features to help prevent screen burn. Sony = great picture quality but bulky and guns need adjusting. Samsung = good picture quality but screen door effect is there. Panny = fantastic picture quality but is the most expensive of the bunch (unless you get the edtv model which is still phenomenal).

Re: [costa22] Whats the best?? [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes I have a one right now! I had no intentions of getting PANASONIC (but I did!) cause honestly I don't like the name PANASONIC. LOL LOL LOL........But like I told you earlier, I took an extreme caution and finally BURN-IN issue was my utmost concern. I decided the PANASONIC MODEL TH-37PWD6UY and didn't think twice when I got the chance. I payed it cash! didn't want to be shipped , I didn't trust no one! I went to pick up personally and it was a GLORY!........It's wall-mounted in my 16 x 16 bedroom. 37 inch is perfect for bedroom size, 42 is rather bigger , looks bigger, especially if you choose to sit in it's table stand and I wouldn't suggest that! .......Few weeks later, I didn't like the color of the bezel. With a simple tweak, I made it to SILVER color like I always wanted. If you notice the picture below: it's all coated with silver finished sticker, brush-aluminum finished. Most of my componentry are Brush aluminum finished. I didn't purchased the original speakers cause I always wanted my BEOLAB 8000 to drive the speaker output and it was a success. I didn't need a further use of a subwoofer. At night, I can switch the BOSE cubes for lower bass response.

I have to tell you with my experiences, using a DV1 or COMPONENT selector will degrade the brightness of the plasma, I don't know why!. I end up returning some items I purchased cause I wasn't happy from the outcome. Since I have 3 independent input: I used the VGA (computer input )with converting cable for my HDTV tuner, COMPONENT YPbR for my DVD player, and S-VIDEO for my 8mm VCR.

When you ready to get your's let me know!. but remember! do not pay any extra. WARRANTY as such. It is imperative to test your Plasma overnight, soon as you open from the box. If you notice any pixel defect, do not wait for another day for exchange. Manufacturer are strict with this rule. Although, Plasma is %99.99 pixel perfect from being brand new, when you receive it defective? NO ONE CAN CAN FIX IT, YOU STUCK WITH IT. so be very careful!. It's 0 to 1 occurrence though. To assure you? Make sure it's MADE IN JAPAN!.....Take my advice.

Thanks for all of the info.. The Panny "6uy" that you have is a commerical model right ? What is the diff. between commercial and consumer plasmas...? Is it just the inputs or what ? Does your plasma operate quietly? Right now I am back and forth between an NEC, a Panny, and a Pioneer. How does your hi def. signal look using that computer output ? What type of high def. service do you use ? I am thinking of getting Directtv myself. Thanks again for all of the info... It sounds like you made all the right moves. Sorry but I had to hit you with a barrage of questions. he he.

BRETT! Yes it's a commercial model. Commercial plasma is long-term intended. They put more effort into it. Durability and all that. Price is affrordable than consumer model. The only disadvantage: INPUT is minimal since it's Professional.

Consumer model is I would say an easy way intended for direct viewing. most of your options from Professional display are included in the packaging like INPUTS NO:1 DV1 input, HDTV receiver and reason being they cost more, not necessarily they operate better than Commercial display.

I know exactly how you feel about your skepticism between your choices. You will be lying to yourself when you found something else better when you visit your nearest PLASMA dealer (that's what happen to me! lol). This time? trust your INSTINCT. It's how you feel on one thing. Not OTHER's or I would recommend. I can only give you an intuition to why I end up with the PANASONIC and glad I did embraced unknown choices.

My plasma is fanless. There's no audible noise upon operation even up close. It's been operating more than 20 hours/ day for almost one year now and the brightness remain thesame. In fact it's set to -30. My high-def signal from component output (receiver ) to VGA input (plasma) is just as clear as the YPbR standard connection from my DVD player.

Again! Direct TV (receiver) does not offer high definition OUTPUTS to their receiver. You wouldn't expect a truly high definition signal when your connection allowed is S-VIDEO alone, and that's DIRECT TV has. Just make sure, the HDTV tuner/ receiver you will be getting has atleast DV1 and COMPONENT YPbR OUTPUT from it.

It's not that I made all the right moves. Im glad I did experience the whole HIGH-DEFINITION term in REALITY, and not just by reading through reviews. and beleive me. It's a Pain, it's quite a challenge mainly in my pocket when unfit cabling is use in PLASMA display. I have no idea about MONSTER cable ability compared back in ANALOG world.

feel-free anytime!

Re: [Guest] Whats the best?? [In reply to] Can't Post

Leo, hey it's Brett. I pulled the trigger on my plasma on Sunday afternoon. I got the Pioneer purevision 4340 model. I went to compusa and they had the display model knocked down from $5499 to $4499. I finally wound up getting them down to $4267 plus I got the 2 yr. warranty with it so I am covered. It is going to be delivered on Thursday... I am a little nervous but I guess that is normal. I had the kid at the store let me set it to the settings that I preferred and then he went to the back and gave it a high def. feed and WOW !! I was impressed ! For now I am going to get high definition cable through brighthouse ( my local cable co.) and if I am not happy with that I will get directtv. I live in St. Pete FL so I am a little concerned about the receiver being outside in hurricane season... as you probably know we got taken behind the woodshed this season. ha ha. My fiance and I cashed out $20,000 from our house and she threw 5k my way for the plasma... I guess I'll keep her. If she reads this I'm toast. I am a huge red sox, pats, celts, bruins, fan as I was born and raised in Boston. Once a Bostonian always a Bostonian... and ummm... I still think I am going to wake up and find out it didn't happen. You know what I'm talking about. UNREAL !!!!! Wanted to thank you for all of the advice through the "narrowing process" I hope that I have the same good luck that you have had. Talk at ya,

Brett.Wink

Re: [Guest] Whats the best?? [In reply to] Can't Post

Im back, You mentioned about a litle nervousity towards finalizing the deal. Simply you were excited. when your heart rules your mind. But I tell you this: It was a mistake taken by your excitement./ I understand that fully but it's wasn't wise brett!.

OK BRETT!. what Im trying to tell you is: You took a STORE DISPLAY MODEL for $4,267.00 / God know's what how long has been, being on operation within the past 2 year's ever since it was put on DISPLAY. If so, the Plasma you just purchased of that amount has already spent it's half-life and it's not fair to the amount you just paid. You also mentioned that if you're not happy ( I really wished that you WOULDN'T) Pls don't get a direct TV. PLEASE! return the DISPLAY for a brand new one ATLEAST!. don't settle for THAT!..Remember! COMPUSA has 30 days return/exchange warranty, so before they deliver, or while having this time, confirm the store what's their POLICY on PLASMA DISPLAY. You have 2 more days to decide. ( COMPUSA, im sorry hope you're not watching lol ).

Also, that Pioneer 4340CMX model has history of burn-in. I have seen that model at bestbuy. Not that Im trying to change your mind. If you are contented with the aesthetics as you mentioned, atleast think of NOT settling for second hand, open box or used one, regardless of warranty as such implied, especially if you're paying more than the asking price of same model for a BRAND NEW ONE now. Im sorry to tell you, COMPUSA just ripped you off. That particular model has been discontinued and Price is no longer thesame as it was introduced. But it's still available everywhere but not the price you just paid.

I have few dealers you can trust / outside your area in order to avoid paying sky high taxes. why you didn't think of that?......

Anyhow it's not too late, Talking bout UNREAL is something you can't get out of. and TIME still on your side, If you loose a litle money to get a brand new one cause im sure they will charge you for re-stocking FEE which is going to happen. then just take it. It's not that much.

HEY Have FUN! 4 DA weekend though!. Next week hope you decide to get a BRAND NEW ONE.

LEO
