Zenith Plasma or LCD output Black and White

Hey everyone, well my uncle has a Zenith TV, it is a year or so old, I dont have the model number now, so I dont know if it is a LCD or Plasma, but he told me it was thin and it could hang on wall. He also told me it has channel up and down on the remote so it apparently has a tuner.
Well he doesnt have a book, and I have never had one of these types of TVS. Well he said that it had alot of connectors, including 9 pin connectors, I am sure they are the DVI and I forgot the other H something connector. He also said it doesnt have a coax hookup for cable.
Anyway, he said since it didnt have a coax hookup, he attatched his vcr on the rca inputs, and he said that the picture came up Black and White. He said when he uses the menu on the remote it is in color.
Could you please tell me, how to tell if it is LCD or Plasma, and why it is only coming up in Black and White. Also what about hooking up cable, do you have to have some type of converter or something?
