53" sony projection picture too dark

sometimes my picture looks ok and is bright however recently the picture has become dark and very hard to see on both cable and dvd's. i was wondering if anyone had an idea of what it could be. its an older model(1996 sony) but i believe i could still get a quality picture out of it. any advice would be appreciated
