Could a failing lamp cause this problem. Can't Post

TV just shuts off and the screen turns black. Is it the lamp or the TV?

YES!
My best guess with the limited information you provided! (No Age/Brand or Model Number)

Just my usual:
1) Pick something that's in your price range (has this Brand been around very long? - will they still be around next year?);
2) Spend only what you would to be happy to say "I got my money's worth," presuming that they will fail sometime between 3 to 7 years after purchase;
3) If you obtain an extended warranty, make sure the warranty repair company will still be around when you require them.
As always it's "Let the buyer beware!
