DVD Upconvert to Zenith 44" LCD RPTV

I bought the Zenith 44" LCD RPTV last week. I love the picture from HD channels. However, the picture from my DVD is not so great. I do understand the DVD resolution does not output to match HDTV. Does an upconvert DVD payer make a difference? My current DVD player is not a progressive scan. Does progressive scan generate a better picture?
