low voltage or high voltage failure, probably shorted horizontal output transistor & flyback transformer, very common failure items for your set, either part will give you the symptoms you have given.

Charles; cost to repair tv`s varies greatly by geographical location, My shop is on the west coast of Florida, ballpark at my shop for H. out & flyback would be as follows; $125 Labor $55.00 Service Call $65 parts and 6% sales tax. This cost would be doubled if you live in NYC because the cost of being in business is so much higher. I would call and get a few estimates from your local tv shops and see what your charges will be and then decide, In my opinion the new LCD & DLP sets are high priced pieces of junk and that`s what your going to have to buy if you condemn your set, hope this helps, Larry E

Larry; thanks so much for you time answering my questions.
My grandson gave me this T V and replacing it is not possible for me.
I am out in the boondocks in Tennessee and only two repair shops within fifty miles, one of these I used several years ago and would rather junk T V than have anymore dealings with him.
I do appreciate your information and hope to get it repaired. Charles

Had my T V repaired you were so close on the estimate it could have been you I was dealing with.
They replaced H V transformer $64.00 and 233/a(cannot read this item) but was $16.00 Labor $112.50
I pulled it took it in and retrieved it, no problem except the weight, age taking a toll for me.
T V works Great with one exception.
Had trouble with downloading the Guide several days before I finally got the Guide then it was gone downloaded it two or three more times finally it shows but not like it was before I had the T V problem.
Think I have a problem with my Remote not every button works as it once did.
My question now is can I purchase a different brand remote that will work with T V or do need to find a G E remote.
Cannot find a model number on this remote (it is the original that came with T V)
