Hitachi 53" mini blinds in picture Can't Post

OK I'm a newbie here.....first let me say Hi!

As of about 20 years ago, I'm no longer in the repair biz, and I'm new to digital sets. I have a 53" Hitachi, mod# SDX20BB that was given to me from my daughter. When the scenes change, I get "mini blinds" (for lack of a better description of the problem) in the bright areas of the pix that only show up for a split second. No ryme or rythem, just enough to me crazy! Crazy

Has anybody here come across this problem in the past?........or maybe direct me to the section on the chassis that may be causing this problem? (I'm thinking video output)

I have soldered and soldered, even inside the shielded modules, tried adjusting the screens up and down, nothing so far has helped. Brightness and contrast adjustment has no effect on it. I don't have a schematic (should prolly get one, I still need to know how to get the service screen)........I'm thinking maybe an open capacitor? I just don't know where to start looking.....and checking every cap on the chassis is a lot of work. Tongue

Please help! .........and thanks in advance. Wink

Sounds like its pixilating which may not be a component it may be a firmware upgrade issue. If you are who you say you are, you should know better, you will not fix this, its a manufacturers fix or his agent.

Hmm....."pixelating"......I've never heard that term before. I'm glad I came here first and asked before trying to replace those pesky surface mount capacitors. I've done those before on my old Hitachi 50". I just thought maybe it could be a problem in the video processor circuitry somewhere I'm not familiar with.

As for being "what I say I am", I don't feel as if I need to prove that to anybody......I simply came here asking for advice. Is that not what these forums are for? Excuse me.......Shocked

As I stated above, I have no experience at all with digital TV, but much of what I do know I have mostly learned on my own over the past 37 years, with advice from friends who are no longer around. There's no feeling that's better than when a customer says to you that his picture is "better than it was when it was brand new"! I still have literally hundreds of tubes, many BRAND NEW still in the boxes in my basement. I also have a Sencore tube tester and a B&K sweep generator (that I really never used much), and a B&K rejuvenator and a nice B&K transistorized scope. All this stuff is too outdated for today, but it is for sale if anybody here is into antiques. LOLSly I'll keep my color bar generator, and sometimes I still play with the scope a little just to mesmerize the grandchildren. Wink

I know you guys get a lot of people come on here that don't even know how to solder and have never even had the GUTS to take the back off a set but want to start turning things just to save themselves some money. In the other side of the coin, I've met a few guys who call themselves "repairmen" but couldn't repair themselves out of a paper bag and that's just the plain old truth! In the past I fixed a lot of things that were given up for dead over simple things. These days it's too much cheaper to just buy a new one, which makes me glad I gave it up when I did. Hats off to you guys for sticking with it........remember when re-built color picture tubes cost only $29.95?

Back to my original question........it sounds like this is out of my league. I was hoping it was just a capacitor somewhere. Are you telling me what my set needs is just a basic software upgrade or something? I don't see a port on the board where they could connect it to a computer for that but maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. Unsure

it maybe the fault has always been there so an inherent design fault is suspected.have you searched the hitachi technical site for fault tips and downloads for this model?pixilating pics can be a fault in the video processor or just software problems (you see the grief we get from new stuff now?). finding a fault like that is best done by checking for upgrades which are done "on air" here in europe or by discs from manufacturers, or if none available then change the video processor pcb to see if it cures it. To be honest, the chances of finding and curing that type of fault without board changing are just about zero.good luck anyway but from experience I dont think you will cure this by changing individual components until the fault is cured unless you have a lot of free time

Joe, SDX20BB doesn`t come up as a valid model number, re-check and re-post with correct model number, the chassis number would also help.

Chassis # is DP-15.

I ordered a service manual for this set, and here's what's so wierd.......by the time it got here the problem has mysteriously gone away! Go figure.Crazy

After reading about the adjustment proceedures for this set, I can understand why you guys are so reluctant to offer DIY advice. It would be VERY easy to screw things up really bad if you don't know what you're doing. I think if my "pixilation" problem re-appears I may just call in a professional to fix this one for me. Apparantly the days of mechanical adjustments are long gone. And it used to be so easy........Unsure
