JVC AV50PRO loud popping noise

I was watching TV yesterday when my JVC AV50PRO 50in rear projection suddenly made a loud popping sound. The picture distorted for a second, then all was well again. Within minutes, the popping sound returned, so I turned the set off. Waited a day to turn back on. Now the popping sound is continuous as soon as the set is turned on with the remote. Checked for blown fuses or burnt PCB, but couldn't find anything wrong. TV is 7 years old and still looked good as new up until yesterday. Any ideas what could be wrong?
