Magnavox Rear Projection - Colors not lining up. blurry please help

I have a ~1997 Magnavox rear-projection 48inch tv. It works fine when I first turn it on, but soon after the colors seem to spread apart and it creates a double image.
Occasionally, hitting the top of the tv will fix the issue temporarily, but lately nothing will right the situation except for turning it off for a while. This happens just about every time I turn it on: it is fine for about 5-10 minutes, then flips to the double image.
Any Ideas?
I would prefer to fix it myself if possible.
