with a 17 year old set almost anything will cause this, when capcitor age the will change voltages in that curcuit, the CRT'S probley have burned or turned brow with age this will cause a poor pix, this happens so slowly most people don't see this happen., other componets break down and change value just a little but enogh to affect Pix quality, Then theres the bad thing.......you want to get it fixed, we go change 50 or 60 capacitors that we can find wrong by using a ERS meater, change a few resistors and solder up the entire set, this some times works but what usaly happens is componets weekened by lower voltages are now running at a voltage they havent seen in years, then they start to fail, the set makes it back to the shop several times only to finally get to the point where the part we need is nol longer made or avalible and nothing can be done. Now we got a pissed custmer who spent !$1000.00 on a 17 year old set that was kept on life support way to long.... Now lets say the custmer said "well we hardly ever watch this set" Thats fine and dandy for the CRT'S not burning but all the rest is still going on... I use a little saying and some times it offends people but here it is "Tv's age like cats, how much longer and how much you going to spend on this 17 year old cat?
