Mitsubishi VS60703 problem with tuner? Can't Post

So... i turned my tv on today, and there's a weird redish/bluish hue over the screen, i can hear the sound, and still see whats on the screen it just has the color over it. i dont have this problem when in the menu screen, or the picture in picture, they are perfectly clear, but no matter what i connect to it, cable, dvd player, it remains like this when not in pip or on the menu screen. i tried doing a hard reset (leaving it unplugged for 4 hours), tried resetting the convergence, and just about everything else i could possibly think of.

anyone know any quick fixes, or what the problem might be? i thought since its a dual tuner tv, maybe one of the tuners wasnt working, but i didnt understand why when the menu screen was full screen it looks perfect?

please help, i dont want to buy a new tv!

If it's exhibiting the same defect with the A/V inputs, that should rule out the main tuner.

"PIP from 2nd tuner is good" - Is that both as a small PIP and as the main picture when "Swap"?

OSD information is inserted past the point where your trouble lies.Wink

when i do the swap whatever goes into the pip is clear, and whatever fills the rest of the screen is blurry.

i talked to some pretty uninformative techs at mitsubishi, and they said it definitely wasnt an issue with with the bulbs, but they didnt know what it was.

IF you were to turn the color DOWN all the way for main picture, would you be left with NO VIDEO (luminance)?Wink

Is it just the photo or does TV picture appear lighter on one side and darker on the other?

i turned the color all the way down, and there was no picture, it was completely black.

the tv is slightly lighter on one side of the screen, but not noticeable when the menu screen is up.

So follow the video. You lose it somewhere before/up to where the PIP and OSD are inserted.

i didnt know if this was a fairly common problem and youd be able to tell me what part isnt working by the symptoms, i dont fully understand the the inside of the set, so i cant really 'follow the video'.

what does it mean that when you turn the color down the picture disappears?

Some problems, when described with sufficient detail, may jog a members memory or he may look through his records or do a search, etc. and come up with one or more part/location numbers of components to try. Not ALL problems are like that.

Composite video is combined luminance and chrominance signal. If you use RCA plugs/jacks for signal, that is composite video.

If you use "S-video" plugs/jacks you are using two separate signals: Luminance is the video portion of signal. Chrominance is the color portion.

A TV's comb filter handles chroma and luma separately too.

Your chroma is present (with color turned up), but when color is turned down, since there is no luma, there is no Picture.

ah, i wasnt sure if there was a certain part that typically goes bad resulting in the loss of that signal. do you suggest just getting a tv repairman then?

Do you have a scope? If not TV repairman time. Could be bad comb filter, PIP, delay line, discrete transistor, IC, the list goes on.

chrisxxx & jts1957;....

1st , some bad news....
Last monday my computer crashed.....
I called Microsoft for some help.....
They said do a system "Repair"......
I asked;.Will it damage or destroy any of my files or data or pix & manuals etc.....
They said "No , it won't"....
So I did....I'm here to tell you my computer went from bad to 1000% worse....
I lost a LOT of stuff....Manuals , pix , drawings etc.....
We are currently trying to get this unit somewhat useable....
So much for my woes..........

chrisxxx & jts1957;....

This set has a VZ5 chassis....
I do not have the manual for this one....
I have the manual for VZ2....
IF your set has a "PIP" module that sticks up off the main board , you might try replacing it....
It should unsnap from the main board after you release 2 clips on the sides....
There should be a black or brown wire connected to a shiney metal shield (Cover) that you will have to unsolder to get the board out...

jts , you recall those Mitsubishis that had those stinky fish oil surface mounted lytic caps that went bad on those "PIP" boards....
Methinks he has one of those boards in his set....
IF he does , chances are that it's the problem....
There was a kit available for us "techs" to repair those boards.....
Had about 10~12 of those stinky caps in it....
I would NOT advise chrisxxx to get the kit....
I would advise him to get the board instead....

GOOD LUCK.....Laugh.....

Keep us posted....THANKS.....Wink....

Had already read about your computer mishap in an earlier post.

You're recalling the 930B552 series boards that plug into two multipin connectors in the late 80's to mid 90's sets. This chassis was made around 1998 and PIP is integral to the Signal PCB. BTW you only needed to change 4 caps and possibly add a jumper if a foil was damaged. Of course this (and the "bypass" methods) presumed customer NOT interested in PIP being functional.

jts1957;.....

Yup , those are the ones....
I remember the jumper method...
Usually my customers wanted the PIP working , so that meant dealing with those stinking caps....

Thanks for the input....Wink....
