NO sound on SONY KP-53U80

Hello Everyone,
I have a 1999 Sony 53" projection TV (model no : KP-53U80, serial no : 9034290, manufactured : Dec. 1999). The tv recently loss sound. The picture still shows but the sound fluctuated on and off. This went on for about a week and now there is no sound at all. I would like to know if anyone has any idea and/or experience with a similar situation. I really want to fix the TV since it's out of warranty and I need pointers since i'm a novice at this! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
